DIY Fun: “Cool” Pants

DSC_0032Our Oliver is quite the character. He is so particular about what he wears that recently, asking him to get dressed in the morning has gotten kind of ugly. It ends with clothing strewn about his room, and one very unhappy 3-year-old rolling around on the floor, crying “These pants aren’t COOOOOOL!”

Recently, in an attempt to understand exactly what “cool” is to Oliver, I discovered that plain anything (pants, shirts, socks, underwear) is uncool. Lightening strike pants, loud zippy colors, crazy patterns, bright orange dinosaur leggings, skeleton pajamas, or space-themed anything is cool. Which is a problem. Because nearly all of the hand-me-downs from Milo are simple, plain basics that I bought because of their plain-ness.

The solution? Fabric paint and a bit of creativity. A while back, I spotted these cool pants but absolutely could not justify their price tag (holy cow, they were expensive!), I decided to make them. Here’s how:

Materials Needed:

  • White fabric spray paint (I used Tulip brand, found at Michael’s)- be careful NOT to get puffy fabric paint!
  • Black sweatpants (these are Apaman from a couple of years back)
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock large enough to cut a pattern into, or you could even use a piece of fabric as long as you are careful to cut straight lines

DSC_0026DSC_0029DSC_0028First, carefully cut the shape you want into the card stock. Make sure your pants are flat on the area you are going to spray, then place the pattern on top of the area you want to paint.DSC_0030

Hold the pattern in place while you spray the paint on, then carefully remove the pattern. Wipe excess paint off with a paper towel (be sure to wipe underneath too!), and repeat on the other side. Allow to dry for 4 hours, and avoid washing for 72 hours. For best results, wash pants inside-out. And voila! Cool pants!DSC_0036

Once the king Oliver approved of the coolness, I made another pair, this one with O’s to match the X’s. He insisted on wearing them both on the same day. Success!

DSC_0045Now, let’s hope the third little guy is not quite so picky once these make it down the line to him!

Dress That Kid: Holiday Shopping

DSC_0010

Self high-five for a job well-done!

DSC_0005

I haven’t been posting a lot of outfits for the boys (or Andrew, for that matter) lately, so I wanted to share what they wore yesterday before preschool and for a bit of Christmas shopping. It looks a bit like Emil is wearing pajamas, but it’s actually the coolest sweater-onesie and he gets mad compliments on it. I kind of wish they had one in my size, it’s so cozy and warm!

DSC_0001

On Emil: Hat: Speesees (circa 2007); Red Sweater Romper: BabyGap- I love this one!; Boots: Riley Roos (which have lasted quite well through three boys!)

On Milo: Fair-Isle Scarf: GapKids (similar); Holiday Sweater: Thrifted; Jeans: Tea Collection; Desert Boots: GapKids

On Oliver: Chambray Shirt: Thrifted; Vest: Crewcuts; Corduroy Pants: Tea Collection; Boots: Thrifted

An interesting thing has happened clothing-wise with the boys. I was delusional in thinking that any significant number of pants would last through Milo and Oliver and actually make it to Emil. We’re lucky if Milo doesn’t blow the knees out of his pants by the time he outgrows them! Luckily there are a couple of amazing consignment/thrift stores for kids around here, because these guys know how to tear it up at the playground (see the below black eye if you don’t believe me)!

Happy Wednesday!

Dress That Mama (and Baby)

DSC_0005

Happy Thanksgiving Eve! I thought I would share what Emil and I wore to walk to coffee with friends. My most recent discovery? These shoes are actually really comfortable!!!

On Mama: Knit sweater dress: Anthropologie (2 years ago); sweater: Anthropologie (5 years ago and easily my most-worn winter item); faux fur stole: Anthropologie (last year, but find similar here); fox tights: Anthropologie (still in stock and very warm!); clogs; Rachel Comey

On Baby: Shearling-lined cap: Speesees (hand-me-down from Milo & Oliver); plaid shirt: BabyGap; knit gray suspender pants: Janie & Jack (hand-me-down from Oliver); sweater: BabyGap (on sale in stores now); booties: Riley Roos (again, hand-me-downs from Oliver– these shoes are really really well-made and I highly recommend!)

DSC_0004

Hope you’re getting those bellies ready for some pie tomorrow! Happy Wednesday!

Dress Those Guys: Bow Ties for All!

DSC_0009

Yesterday was picture day at Milo & Oliver’s preschool. So, of course, bow ties. Then Andrew came downstairs and yes, another bow tie! Pretty fancy, no? Now I’m interested in the hilarity of the actual school photos, because no amount of combing or brushing will tame those manes. Should be pretty funny… which is exactly what a school picture should be!

On Milo: shirt: Crewcuts (on sale last year); bow tie: same- out of stock; jeans: Tea Collection (on sale at City Sprouts in the summer– I’m telling you, buying out of season is the way to go!); shoes: Crewcuts (on sale last year)

On Oliver: shirt: thrifted; bow tie: Crewcuts (on sale this summer)– sold out, but this one is cute!; jeans: BabyGap- similar here; boots: Blundstones (a gift from Ingrid)

On Andrew: shirt: JCrew; cardigan: JCrew (ah-em, also on sale); bow tie: Forage (a father’s day present)- sold out, but I love this one by Fox and Brie; trousers: Banana Republic; sneakers: Tretorn (on sale, of course)

Whew! How’s that for a linked-up post?!

Happy Wednesday!

Dress That Kid: Comfy Layers

DSC_0005

It’s now chilly enough in the mornings for a couple layers for the boys on their walk to school. Milo is always freezing… except when he’s not, which usually means he’s overheated! Oliver never really complains about being hot or cold, but his hands are always requiring gloves these days!

DSC_0001

Today was a sweatpants kind of day. I think there are plenty of great styles of sweatpants that are comfortable and stylish, so there’s no need to feel like a slacker for putting your kids in warm, comfy clothes.

DSC_0013

I may have done a happy dance when I found Emil’s brand new Minnetonka moccasins for $5 in a kids consignment shop last month…

DSC_0015

On Oliver: Hat: brought back from Andrew’s 2008 trip to Peru; navy blue tank: BabyGap; striped henley: Crewcuts (Milo’s hand-me-down); sweatpants: Crewcuts (also Milo’s hand-me-down); boots: Blundstone (a gift from Ingrid)

On Milo: Hat: bought at the Tower Grove International Festival last year; scarf: Crewcuts (thrifted); thermal henley: Crewcuts (on sale last year); sweatpants: TeaCollection; shoes: New Balance (also on sale last year– but these shoes are the most durable Milo has ever owned, so maybe worth buying at full price).

DSC_0021

On Emil: Hat: brought back from Peru (but I have seen similar ones at arts and crafts fairs in several different cities); shirt: BabyGap (on sale now- but we snagged it for an extra 40% off in-store); sweater: thrifted (tags cut out); pants: Bond (a gift from a friend in Australia and one of my favorite brands of children’s leggings); moccasins: Minnetonka ($5! $5!).

Hope you’re enjoying this “sweater weather” as much as we are!

Dress That Kid: Convicted Felon Edition

DSC_0127

… Just kidding (kind of)!

DSC_0125

This week I bring you the mighty prison baby jumpsuit. It is chambray (one trend I am fully on board with this fall… for myself as well as my kids), it is lined in soft fleecy material for the cooler months, and it has those little buttoned hems on the legs for cuffs if your kids’ legs are short. Poor little Emil. Tenth percentile for height and weight!

DSC_0129

But don’t feel too bad for him– what he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed and agility! P.s.- Did I mention he is running everywhere now?

DSC_0134

On Emil: Chambray jumpsuit: BabyGap (on sale online now!)

DSC_0137

Shoes: See Kai Run (These were hand-me-downs from my friend Mary’s little boy Ben… and have now made it through three boys, still going strong! I know full price they are expensive for toddler shoes, but if you have multiple kids, this is a very well-made brand. Obviously.)

DSC_0138

Enjoy your Wednesday of freedom!

Dress That Kid: Transition to Fall

DSC_0003

We’re at a tough place outfit-wise around here. It is still pretty warm, as I found out after I took these pictures (it is supposed to get up to 97 here– oops!) but other days it feels more like the beginning of fall. So I did switch out a few things as the morning wore on (Milo’s long-sleeved shirt and Oliver’s overalls had to go).

DSC_0006

On Milo: Long-sleeved shirt: Tea Collection; cut-off shorts: Tea Collection (used to be pants); shoes: Crewcuts (on sale a few seasons ago)

DSC_0007

On Oliver: Tank: Tea Collection; overalls: Crewcuts; Sandals: Teva

DSC_0008

On Emil: T-shirt: Nordstrom Rack; Overalls: gift; shoes: See Kai Run (hand-me-downs from Ben!)

Today we are heading to the playground with our little buddy Georgia! It will either make me feel like I can do anything, or confirm my thoughts on having four kids (she is easy as pie and just as sweet, so I’m thinking the first)!

Dress That Kid: Milo

DSC_0004

This morning I was begging the elusive Professor Knight to allow me to photograph him in his regular old “street clothes” and having no luck, when around the corner who should I see but this dapper young man in a bow tie. He informed me that he was playing picture day with Oliver, who was wearing underpants and a backpack and nothing else. So, rather than get the whole crew all dapper-ed up, I whisked him out to the old stump and snapped a few quick pictures. Back to school time, anyone?

DSC_0001

On Milo: Bow tie: Crewcuts (but find some fantastic colors here); long-sleeved gingham shirt: Crewcuts (on sale)

DSC_0011

Shorts: Crewcuts (again, on sale)

DSC_0013

Shoes: Toms (last season, bought at Nordstrom on clearance– and now I know why– they are super duper hard to get on and off, but maybe they will stretch out with wear I HOPE! This is the first bad experience I’ve had with Toms- boo).

DSC_0015

They sure are cute, so I hope it works out!

Dress That Kid: Mixing Patterns

DSC_0007

Serious faces

I promise, I don’t color-coordinate the kids. But some days, like today, I notice a common  color and it freaks me out a little. Or some days I’ll dress them all in stripes and have no idea until someone points it out to me! So strange. I guess today, I was really feeling this lemony-limey color!

DSC_0005

Also, again, the bandana is serving a purpose: Oliver’s hair-containment. This guy refuses to let me touch his hair, so I guess we’re growing it out (at least until he lets me cut it)! And Milo is rockin’ the stripes + plaid. Personally, I think it works!

DSC_0011

On Milo (far right): Striped tee shirt: Crewcuts (same style, different color); plaid shorts: TeaCollection; Boots: Livie & Luca (City Sprouts)

DSC_0020

On Oliver (left): Bandana: thrifted; Tee shirt: Crewcuts (Milo’s hand-me-downs); shorts: TeaCollection (Milo’s hand-me-downs); Boots: Livie & Luca (City Sprouts)

DSC_0021DSC_0024

On Emil: Dandelion kimono onesie: Speesees (from 2007– how cute is this hanky?); Pants: Nordstrom Rack; Sandals: Janie & Jack (Milo & Oliver’s hand-me-downs)

DSC_0026

P.s.- We are in the market for some new shoes for Milo & Oliver for the fall, as they have clearly worn out the ones they have. I love these and these. Do you have any favorite shoes or boots for your little ones? We need sturdy, sturdy, sturdy!

Dress That Kid: Summer Heat

DSC_0001

It has been ridiculously hot here in St. Louis. Like, 94 degrees by 10am hot. However, just like in cold winter, staying indoors all day every day is not an option for us. And since these guys wake up at the crack of dawn (which seems to be 5:30am these days), we are up and out early enough to enjoy the cool 90 degree weather before it gets too bad. Ha! So this post is dedicated to dressing for the heat!

DSC_0006Milo’s bandana is cute but functional- it is lightweight cotton, keeps the sun off his neck, and when soaked with water, also keeps him cool. We always dress in breathable cotton during the hot summer months.

DSC_0007

And usually Milo also wears sandals or flip flops in this kind of weather, but he was going with a cowboy theme and wanted to don the boots for the photo shoot!

DSC_0010

On Oliver: lightweight gray cotton tank: GapKids (thanks for the inspiration, Lilly!); shorts: Tea Collection (clearance;, adventure sandals: Teva (hand-me-downs from Milo)

On Milo: cotton bandana: from a cowboy costume (!); Japan tee: Crewcuts (100% of the profits of this shirt are donated to the Japanese Red Cross Society for helping victims from the earthquake and tsunami); shorts: Tea Collection; boots: Livie & Luca (City Sprouts)

DSC_0012

On Emil: printed romper: Tea Collection (City Sprouts has a great selection!); sandals: Janie and Jack (hand-me-downs from Milo and Oliver)

DSC_0018

What’s the matter, Oliver? Tired?

Hope you’re staying cool this summer!
