Thanksgiving Day, 2011
*Sorry, had to include this picture to show my mom… new chair!*
Our “Thankful Tree,” courtesy of our friend Bethany. Around Halloween time, she gave us the tree with one heart “leaf” and we added on as the days went by. Favorite quotes on tree:
“I thankful for wall, Mom.” – Oliver (he clearly missed the point)
“I’m thankful for the darkness. And I’m not afraid of it.” – Milo (um… okay)
“Thankful for cat! Meow!” – Oliver (we do not own a cat)
“I’m thankful for ALL of my family. Even Oliver.” – Milo
“I’m thankful that my plane didn’t crash.” – Andrew
“I’m thankful for gummy vitamins.” – Oliver
The feast, minus the turkey resting in the kitchen
The whole crew!
This is not what it looks like. Poor Oliver. Really, all that happened was I asked Milo to take his hand off of his face. He grabbed his nose, Louisa grabbed her nose to copy him, and Oliver started to get out of his chair.
The meal was a success! Andrew actually smoked the turkey on our grill, which freed up the oven for all the sides. And it turned out AMAZING! Well done, Andrew! Since Mary and Jamie and their kids are vegetarian, we tried to focus less on the meaty side of Thanksgiving, but still made traditional items for Elin and Erik’s first American Thanksgiving. Elin brought her amazing bread. We also had turkey, stuffing, chestnut, apple, & sage stuffed acorn squash, roasted brussels sprouts, mashed potatoes, gravy, a salad of baby greens with gorgonzola, cranberries, apples, and candied pecans, sauerkraut, and spinach artichoke dip with garlic toasts. All in all, I think dessert was the biggest hit.
Dessert table: pumpkin pie, pecan pie, pumpkin-pecan crumb cake, maple whipped cream, a cheese plate, champagne, and mulled cider!
Pecan pie was GONE by the next morning! Thanks for the recipe, Mom.
And what holiday shenanigans are complete without the mandatory mustache-by-the-fire photo? Also doesn’t hurt that Oliver was shirtless and Milo and Ben dressed up as super heroes.
Super heroes are awfully strong.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!
