Reading…

MAPS, by Aleksandra Mizielinska & Daniel Mizielinska

Milo is currently very taken with the book MAPS, which I found at Winslow’s Home (our little neighborhood breakfast place/general store) of all places. The book is a nice large size, which is good, because it tries to pack in a whole lot of information onto each colorful page. Though it does not include all of the countries of the world, it covers some from every continent, and we all really appreciate the detail to culture and landmarks it uncovers.

For instance, on the page about Nepal, there are detailed drawings of the Himalayas and the most prominent mountains in the range; there are roads leading to Lumbini, the place of Buddha’s birth; there are historical facts about the sherpas and first men to climb to the top of Everest in 1953 (New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, if you were wondering); the languages, flora and fauna, local dress and food, and population is included. There is just so much information and it’s so much fun to look at!

Above: Finland! Looking at all the beautiful trees and berries remind me of Milla! (Also, it says, “The Finns drink a lot of COFFEE.”) Ha, ha!

There is just so much greatness in this book! It would make a great gift for a 6 to 9-year-old. I really like the global citizen aspect of the book, which is also a strong Montessori philosophy. Milo and Oliver already knew the continents and many of the countries because of their discussions and lessons in school — this book has been the perfect companion to that journey of learning. It’s a first step in learning about other cultures and countries!

  1. I have had this book in my Amazon cart for weeks now. I just might take the plunge.
I want more of your reading picks because I’m feeling like they are mirroring our family’s pretty closely. Last Child in the Woods is a top five for me. And Gus is on a huge Gary Paulsen kick. Before Gus read Hatchet, we had a pretty hard time getting him to enjoy books. If you have any solid “boy” recommendations, I would love to hear them.

  2. Ha- Rachel me too! This book had been in my Amazon cart since last spring. Thinking it will make a good birthday gift for W next month….very excited to get your endorsement Lauren. I haven’t yet seen it in person.

  3. Hahahah! This book is adorable. Tell him to look for my hometown of Kuopio on the Finnish map. I’d say it’s right on a lake, but I guess that’s really not being helpful. <3

  4. I just spotted this book at a bookstore here in germany the other day and immediately fell in love with it. How true to its spirit that I’m now reading about it here and from you.
Btw: I love your blog (which I found via Milla’s site) and find your thoughts and perspectives very inspiring although I don’t even have any kids (yet). Much love to you and your family! Happy reading and exploring!

  5. Thanks for the recommendation; I just ordered this for my nieces who are 3 and 10 years old – I can picture the two of them laying in bed next to each other with the book propped up in front of them – takes me back to my childhood!
