The City Garden 2013

DSC_0033DSC_0034DSC_0035

Last week, the boys and I revisited one of our favorite places in St. Louis with our friends Elisha, Estella, and Baby January.  I had forgotten how awesome this place is! We spent the late morning until lunch time hopping from one water feature to the next, cheering on Emil and January for their first dip of the season, and certainly not their last!

DSC_0037DSC_0040DSC_0042DSC_0069

Elisha has quickly become one of my best girl friends here in St. Louis. She is positive, fun, quirky, quick-to-laugh, and one of the sweetest people I know. She has a great sense of style, and I always adore how she dresses herself and her sweet girls. She is amazing with little kids and I’m trying to learn patience from her, because she seems to have an endless amount. DSC_0052DSC_0084

Plus, Oliver and Estella are besties, and Emil just adores January, though he needs much reminding about being gentle. She is not a big brother, she does not like to be tackled, and she does not enjoy a good eye-poke. That guy!

DSC_0115DSC_0079DSC_0078DSC_0091DSC_0093

We are enjoying summer to the fullest, and this day was such a good one. Elisha bought the kids lemonade while we dried off in the sun and watched the other kids splashing in the fountains. If you decide to go, choose a weekday and you will practically have the place to yourself! We went on a Wednesday at around 10:30 and there were only a few other people there. Quiet, peaceful, and loads of fun!DSC_0101DSC_0118DSC_0113DSC_0122

These guys are cut from the same mold, clearly. They even run the same way!

DSC_0130DSC_0137DSC_0146DSC_0169DSC_0166Save your energy for the fountains. We dare you to run through without screaming with joy!

P.s.- Check out last year’s City Garden trip here

Happy Friday

DSC_0017DSC_0024This week flew by, thanks in large part to beautiful weather, lots of outside time, and a wonderful visit from our friend Noah (who tolerated all three of our boys jumping on him at once and at all times with a wide smile on his face). We have also been thoroughly enjoying the bounty of our local farmshare, which we are splitting with a neighbor. The above is this week’s takeaway: farm fresh eggs, fresh pea shoots (which are amazing on top of a salad with baby greens and a vinaigrette), tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, Ozark Mountain mushrooms, fresh cilantro, and yogurt from a local creamery… oh, and chocolate. Yes, chocolate.

It feels amazing to walk with the boys and the big double stroller to the church where the CSA distributes the food every other week, watch as Milo and Oliver help set up (they take tremendous pride in carrying or pushing coolers on wheels into the main room and passing them off to the adults), collect our share, and walk back, stopping by our neighbor’s house to drop off their half of the food. And then, it feels even more amazing to cook with all the goodies we have, knowing that it all came from good farms that are close-by, knowing that we are supporting the smaller family-owned farms that otherwise would not be able to compete against the bigger guys. DSC_0013I hope you have a fantastic weekend. We are in for a lot of rain, rain, rain, but after that, we’re gettin’ busy in the garden/mud!

Weekend Shenanigans

DSC_0124DSC_0036DSC_0051

As promised, this weekend was full of plans and fun and ridiculousness, as well as a lot of work (mostly in the garden– but more on that tomorrow). We walked to Washington University for their annual Thurteen Carnival (see last year’s pictures here, and the year before here). The weather was beautiful, sunny, and cool, and we ran into plenty of friends (who turned out to be much more courageous than me when it came to riding those rides!).DSC_0062DSC_0006DSC_0074DSC_0045DSC_0027Oliver ran into his soulmate, Estella, and no, I do not use that word lightly. Those two are crazy in love.DSC_0023DSC_0086DSC_0082We also shared the traditional funnel cake, covered in powdered sugar and grimy hands. It was gone in less than 2 minutes. I timed us.DSC_0079DSC_0094DSC_0096DSC_0095DSC_0018

Emil’s first ride! He loved it.

Poop ^

The rest of the weekend was solid. We rested Saturday afternoon, then put the boys to bed early so that we could go out with some friends to see Josh Ritter play (here are a few of my favorite songs) and stayed out way past our bedtime getting into all sorts of mischief. It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time, and laughed so hard my sides hurt yesterday. Not like this:DSC_0139DSC_0143

That’s better.

Have I mentioned that Emil is a complete papa’s boy? It’s all Papa this and Papa that all day long with that one.

But onto the fun! We nabbed this picture on our way into the show:DSC_0150

And did not take any after shots because we were too… um… silly to do so. There may have been a serious ping-pong game using our hands instead of paddles. Which, if you were wondering, is strangely effective and hilarious.

Milo got a new magnetic body puzzle which is absolutely amazing and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Find one here if you’re interested! (Plus, you can hang it on the wall. It’s so cool.)DSC_0003DSC_0037And just one last shot from our weekend, when the boys had gathered all of the red items they could find and placed them on the step as an offering to the monster they heard upstairs (who only drinks blood: and having no blood to offer, they thought he would be happy with red things). Those boys.

Hope you had a great weekend. Man, life is good.

P.S.- Today Andrew and I celebrate 6 years of marriage! I couldn’t be a luckier gal. Love you, darlin’!

Weekend Shenanigans: A Feast With Friends

DSC_0033DSC_0029DSC_0032My heart is so full as I write this… it seems that with a few good sunny warm days of working in the garden and the kitchen, and sharing good food with close friends, life is really really good. I am grateful for an abundance of beautiful local produce and the means with which to cook it and the money to buy it (and soon to grow it!). I am grateful for healthy, happy children who share space and toys and laughter with other joyful, loving children. I am grateful for the comfort and peace-of-mind that a clean and cared-for home provides. I am grateful for a partner who happily asks, “What can I do to help?” not only in the middle of the night with a screaming toddler, but also during the day with chores and childcare and everything in-between. DSC_0031DSC_0037I am grateful for friends who let me “borrow” their delicious baby girl so that I can satisfy my baby fix without… you know, going there. DSC_0052DSC_0054DSC_0002I am grateful that we found these baby bunnies before our dog did! And they are looking even cuter, if that is possible, since opening their eyes yesterday! DSC_0055DSC_0047

Don’t do it, Emil

I am grateful for good, strong immune systems. Because he did it.

DSC_0057DSC_0059

I am grateful for simple. Because roasting baby carrots in their skins with olive oil, salt, and rosemary makes for a delightful treat. DSC_0060

I am grateful for this life. I am not worthy of it, and I cherish it.

Kansas City Trip

DSC_0017DSC_0018My trip to Kansas City with Ingrid was a much-needed escape and was, for the most part, amazing and wonderful. I would tell you it went without a hitch and that we were both skipping down the sidewalks hand-in-hand, our Swedish girl-braids glinting in the sun and swinging side to side as we laughed and flitted about… but that would have been a lie. Because one does not skip when she is trying with all her might not to soil her pants.

Although I have only dared venture away from my young family with zero children in tow twice, both times I have gotten quite sick only days before I was supposed to leave. The first time, I was pregnant with Emil, on my way to see Mary in Baltimore, and got so sick I ended up down for the count for an entire month and hospitalized twice! Needless to say, that trip was canceled. But this time, the day before I was supposed to leave with Ingrid, when I woke up with a really nasty stomach virus and horrible headache and body aches, even though I felt horrible, I vowed to make myself better (somehow, somehow!) before the trip. I knew that Ingrid had already caught this bug, so I wasn’t worried about getting her sick. I just wanted so badly to go and not miss the concert that she had already bought tickets to… and all the fun we had planned. So I rested as much as I could and even went to bed at 6:30 that night.

By the next morning, I was not 100%, but I was much, much better. So at around noon on Thursday, we left for Kansas City. The drive there was healing. Either the distraction of being with my friend or the giddiness we felt as we drove away from our responsibilities for a couple of days seemed to make my stomach issues take a backseat. We roared with laughter and listened to music and talked and smiled the whole 3 1/2 hours, and when we arrived we were so charmed by the little neighborhood we had decided to stay in (okay, the little neighborhood Ingrid decided on since she is the queen of figuring out what’s cool). We decided to forgo a hotel for AirB&B (where you rent out someone else’s place or in our case, a floor of their house) and it was perfect. So much more personal and interesting (and cleaner, in this case!) than a hotel. Plus, there’s so much character that you can miss when you are closed up inside a hotel. DSC_0004The place we stayed in was in a very hip neighborhood on the Westside of Kansas City with old houses intermixed with modern ones and restaurants, coffee shops, and a couple really cute stores as well. We were a block away from Little Freshie’s (pictured in the first photo of this post and the two directly below), a very simple (and tiny!) coffee shop with amazing coffee (Oddly Correct) and even more amazing orange chocolate chunk scones. They also sold local goodies. I brought back some coffee beans for Andrew and some locally made ketsup for Oliver that was sooooooo much tastier than the sugarbomb that is Heinz ketsup. He actually appreciated it and ate some with his dinner last night! DSC_0011DSC_0012We got settled in and went to dinner at The Westside Local (pictured in the second photo of this post) which had amazing food (having not eaten anything the previous day or that morning, or for lunch… okay, I was starving). Their parmesan parsley french fries were incredible and though I could only stomach a few, their gloriousness was not lost on me.

Later that evening we experienced Sigur Ros. I do not say this lightly: they are incredible, but seeing one of their shows is crucial to understanding just how amazing they are! And there were all walks of life at this show, which was just baffling but really cool to see: a bible-thumping mother with her teenage son; a (maybe autistic) guy with his partner(?) spouse(?) daughter(?); a whole lot of hipsters; a whole lot of hippies; a few just average normal types; old old people; young young people; people of every color and shape and size. And they all seemed to be having a wonderful time, bundled up in coats and blankets and scarves (or in my case, all of the above) under an open sky full of stars. Even through some pretty nasty… eh, em… issues with my lower GI… it was still an incredible concert. DSC_0002We had a great place to go “home” to, and slept in a bit the next morning before heading out to check out the city. We drove around quite a bit looking for cool vintage clothing shops that had unfortunately closed, but we did find a great flea market and spent the entire day looking through them as long as we wanted to. It was a serious novelty!

Our second night we ended up staying in and chatting and flipping through channels after we realized we were too late to catch a movie, but the down time was really nice too. And frankly, neither of us felt like getting all dressed up to walk to First Fridays (opening of all the art galleries down the street from where we were staying) but another time when we are feeling glamorous, we shall be back, Kansas City! DSC_0003We both picked up a few little things for the kids (vintage books and a firetruck for my boys) and I found a great pair of vintage Frye boots in my size that I ended up wearing all weekend long (not that I need another pair of boots… you see my weakness?) and an old kitchen scale that Milo has had a great lot of fun with weighing different items.

I returned to a bunch of little boys in a bathtub chatting away, and a very tired but happy Andrew. While I was off galavanting with my girlfriend, he had managed to take them all around town for fun times and nearly finished pulling up grass in the back yard for the expanded garden plan. We spent the rest of the weekend outdoors, mostly in the back yard, working and smiling and getting rosy cheeks in the sunshine. And by Sunday, my virus seemed to have completely taken off, leaving me appreciative of health, family, friends, good weather, and hard work ahead.

Easter Weekend Shenanigans

DSC_0112By Friday afternoon the last of the snow had melted in our front yard, giving way to miniature daffodils that had bloomed underneath. The boys and I spent all Friday afternoon digging in the garden and after they had a very bubbly and much-needed bath, Andrew had returned home from his office. We all walked to Winslow’s Home for dinner and sat outside, basking in warm spring sunshine. We ran into friends walking by and it was so great seeing people (who must have been cooped up indoors like us) finally out and about!DSC_0036DSC_0026DSC_0028

Milo, Oliver, and I dyed eggs the natural way on Saturday morning (did you know that boiling eggs with half a head of shredded cabbage and 2 Tbsp of vinegar yields blue eggs, not purple? What a fun experiment they thought this was!). The only colors that really turned out were the yellow (turmeric) and blue (cabbage) and though it was fun, it was also a lot more work than just dropping a Paas egg dye tablet into a glass of water (and a lot more dishes).  DSC_0016DSC_0014DSC_0023DSC_0050

It was a weekend of catching up with people. Our neighbors brought us a loaf of freshly baked bread, which we ended up sharing with our good friends on Sunday. And on Saturday night, Andrew and I had a great night out on the town for a surprise birthday party for one of his colleagues in Soulard. Woo, it was a late night for us but a much-needed opportunity to blow off steam!DSC_0052DSC_0067DSC_0073DSC_0064

And Easter Sunday boasted even more beautiful weather. We spent the day with our cool friends Ingrid and Brent and their girls over in their neck of the woods- eating ourselves into a coma with a brunch at their house before joining the neighborhood parade and egg hunt. DSC_0075DSC_0078DSC_0084DSC_0097

Emil went napless for the whole day, instead soaking in the sunshine and stealing jelly beans from unsuspecting children’s baskets. His brothers didn’t mind a bit. DSC_0130DSC_0135DSC_0137We were reminded, as we always are when we are around our wonderful friends, how friends can be your family when family is as far-flung as ours. Our hearts were so full and happy.

It was a bittersweet time, though, as I find my grandfather’s health deteriorating. He had a stroke at the end of last week and it has left him searching for words and very confused. My thoughts have been with him, and my aunt and uncle as they travel down to see him and try their best to make things better. I can’t even imagine how hard it is to watch your parents go through these things as they age. Such a hard part of life. Our hearts are with you, Pop pop.

Yummy Stuff: Vegetarian Quesadillas with Guacamole

DSC_0009

This meal was inspired by my wonderful friends Mary and Jamie, who cooked us a mean veggie quesadilla when we were on vacation in the Outer Banks last summer. And I discovered that they are just as good for breakfast as they are for dinner!

Ingredients

  • 1 package soy-based “crumbles” (we like Trader Joe’s Meatless Ground Beef)
  • 1 red onion, sliced thinly
  • 3/4 cup salsa
  • 1 tsp taco seasoning (or season with cumin, salt, paprika, red pepper, whatever you like!)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar (shredded)
  • whole wheat tortillas

For the guacamole:

  • 2 ripe avacados
  • juice from 1/2 a lime
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 garlic clove
  • pepper, to taste

DSC_0028

Saute your red onion in olive oil over medium heat until somewhat caramelized (don’t rush this process, it takes a while- the key is to not constantly stir the onions, allow them to brown a bit, and if they start looking dry, add just a tablespoon or so of water– mine took 20 minutes to caramelize in an iron skillet).

While the onions cook, make the guacamole. Fork mash the avocados, then add lime juice, garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix well and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Set aside.

DSC_0036DSC_0045

When your onions are mostly caramelized, add salsa and taco seasoning and stir. Add meatless ground beef and stir well until incorporated.

DSC_0050

And there’s your filling! To assemble the quesadillas, place one tortilla on a hot skillet, add the filling, then cover with a good amount of cheddar cheese. Place another tortilla on top, then press down with a large pot lid. Flip after about a minute, being careful not to loose the insides! Cook for about another minute (or less), until all the cheese has melted.

Remove from skillet and slice into triangles on a cutting board. Serve with guacamole and sour cream! Thanks for the inspiration, Mary and Jamie!

Weekend Shenanigans: The Perfect Snow

DSC_0109DSC_0019DSC_0001DSC_0005

Last Thursday, we got a pretty good amount of snow. Enough to close the boys’ preschool on Thursday and need to shovel the car out the next morning. It was strange snow; the kind that falls in huge chunks and looks like fluffy cotton suspended in the air, followed by sleet and freezing rain which created a nice ice crust on the top. Strange snow, but perfect for sledding, as we found out Saturday morning.

DSC_0020DSC_0026DSC_0029

So early Saturday morning, we pulled the boys to Winslow’s Home for hot drinks, then pulled them back up the hill to the field next to their future elementary school for some serious sledding. The sun came out mid-morning and man was it bright! But the sunshine made the cold not-so-cold, so it was just the right kind of weather for hurling your body down an icy hill.

DSC_0031DSC_0045DSC_0048DSC_0049DSC_0054DSC_0058DSC_0066DSC_0076DSC_0088DSC_0096

We stayed all morning, skipping Emil’s nap and only pulling ourselves away when exhaustion and hunger led us to believe it was somewhere near lunchtime. We must have been a spectacle: all five of us laughing and acting so goofy and screaming bloody murder while we swooshed down the hill. When the boys are all a bit older, we will brave the bigger hills, like the infamous Art Museum hill. But for now, Emil’s loud chuckles led us to believe that we chose a good spot!

Saturday afternoon we spent with friends Elisha and JJ and their sweet girls, eating the best guacamole I’ve ever had, messing around with mustaches and bow ties and glasses party favors, and oooing and ahhhing over Elisha’s craftiness (she recently built a new kitchen table out of reclaimed wood- it was gorgeous!) until Oliver pulled out the old naughty card and we had to go home early.

DSC_0131DSC_0134DSC_0138DSC_0145DSC_0146DSC_0121

Oh, and we brought over these cream puffs, the recipe of which I will be happy to share with you tomorrow if you’d like?

DSC_0008

So I guess I can say that though we are almost through all of our firewood that we had collected (for free… more on that later) last summer, and the snow is mostly turned to slush by now, and I am ready to feel cool grass and squishy mud under my bare feet… we were truly joyful this weekend at our sledding luck. Hope you had a good one too!

Weekend Shenanigans/A Very Happy Birthday

DSC_0221DSC_0238

This weekend was so full of joy and laughter and I was completely filled to the brim with gratefulness for so many things in my life. Coming off of a wonderful night out with my friend Ingrid, we made a pact to get our families together soon… and soon ended up being this weekend! Saturday morning was spent by a warm and toasty fire, playing and building and reading with the kids before we headed over to Ingrid and Brent’s house for the afternoon and evening.

DSC_0039DSC_0043DSC_0054DSC_0069DSC_0073DSC_0078DSC_0071

I know I’ve talked about them before on the blog, but I really must reiterate that these two have made life in St. Louis exponentially better for us. They are the sweetest, funniest, most endearing people you will ever meet and we always leave gushing about our friends and how much we truly love them. Their kids too!

DSC_0048DSC_0088DSC_0114DSC_0134DSC_0101DSC_0136DSC_0143DSC_0173DSC_0183DSC_0185DSC_0083

We left later than we should have, but earlier than anyone wanted, as usual, talking of dreams of the future, going on a family vacation together so the night doesn’t have to end, as we swept our crew out into the cold night, not a snowflake in the air…

I awoke to a brightness that I figured was just my lazy sleeping-in birthday sunshine, but it was a good deal of beautiful snow covering everything! The weekend just kept getting better and better. After a slow shower (where I actually shaved both legs) I rallied the troops to get suited up for a walk to breakfast down the road. The snow made us all giddy… there’s just nothing better!

DSC_0206DSC_0212DSC_0218DSC_0223

Emil was oohing and aahing from his carrier on my back while Milo and Oliver hitched a ride on the sled (a wonderful gift from Andrew’s stepmom Gerlyn a few years ago). Our laughter echoed through the trees and the kids’ squeals of joy filled me with happiness and love. I wondered if everyone has this much fun with their kids. We enjoy them so very very much!

Dress That Mama: From Ingrid

DSC_0001DSC_0008

I put this outfit together the other day and was so pleased with the ease and tailored look… then I realized that half of what I was wearing had been gifted from one of my best friends, Ingrid. It sure is nice to have friends with good style!

DSC_0016

Polka dot chambray shirt: JCrew (sold out, but this one is really cute, and this one too!)

Hedgehog necklace: Gift from Ingrid

Wide-leg AG jeans: Gift from Ingrid (thrifted!)

Clogs: Rachel Comey

Basket-as-purse: Whole Foods!

I do love a nice pair of higher-waisted jeans. You know, one of the worst things is a hind-end-crack hanging out when you bend over to tend to a little one or tie someone’s shoes. Thanks, Ingrid! I love it all! And Happy Wednesday to the rest of ya!
