Weekend Shenanigans: Rain

DSC_0133DSC_0023DSC_0024DSC_0025DSC_0029DSC_0013DSC_0019DSC_0021Whew! This word sums up every time I am on my own with the boys. It’s just… whew! We are going on day 4 of 5, and there have been adventures and roller coaster ups and downs… but one thing that we did not let get us down was the weather. It has rained or drizzled or misted nearly all day every day for the past three, but we are looking at some really beautiful warm sunny days ahead. Which means YES to getting the ever-loving darned garden fence built! It will be done. It will be done. DSC_0022DSC_0102

We went out to eat a couple of times, left with two out of three kids screaming once (and probably not the two you would guess), braved the opening day of the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market in the rain and flood, woke up at 5 am every day (no joke. Please. This is no laughing matter), cleaned and organized and did laundry (alright, I did those things while the kids messed up and broke some shit… sorry for offending your delicate ears), built forts, played in puddles at the playground in bare feet before getting nearly drenched on our walk back, played “Professor Experiments” in the bathtub, made yummy food, ate pancakes for dinner… and screamed and yelled a couple of times.. after which Milo walked up to me, rubbed my back, and said, “Mama, what can I do to help?” Yes, I am the adult. DSC_0172DSC_0174DSC_0175DSC_0177DSC_0179DSC_0181DSC_0183DSC_0186DSC_0187Oh! And after the boys went to bed, I stayed up late working on a little surprise for Andrew when he gets home. If you’re curious, check back tomorrow! Happy Monday.

Happy Friday

DSC_0017DSC_0024This week flew by, thanks in large part to beautiful weather, lots of outside time, and a wonderful visit from our friend Noah (who tolerated all three of our boys jumping on him at once and at all times with a wide smile on his face). We have also been thoroughly enjoying the bounty of our local farmshare, which we are splitting with a neighbor. The above is this week’s takeaway: farm fresh eggs, fresh pea shoots (which are amazing on top of a salad with baby greens and a vinaigrette), tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, Ozark Mountain mushrooms, fresh cilantro, and yogurt from a local creamery… oh, and chocolate. Yes, chocolate.

It feels amazing to walk with the boys and the big double stroller to the church where the CSA distributes the food every other week, watch as Milo and Oliver help set up (they take tremendous pride in carrying or pushing coolers on wheels into the main room and passing them off to the adults), collect our share, and walk back, stopping by our neighbor’s house to drop off their half of the food. And then, it feels even more amazing to cook with all the goodies we have, knowing that it all came from good farms that are close-by, knowing that we are supporting the smaller family-owned farms that otherwise would not be able to compete against the bigger guys. DSC_0013I hope you have a fantastic weekend. We are in for a lot of rain, rain, rain, but after that, we’re gettin’ busy in the garden/mud!

Weekend Shenanigans

DSC_0057I only have a few pictures to share from this weekend because, frankly, it kind of sucked. Friday night was the highlight, when I went out to Taste to share a delicious dessert and a slow gin fizz with my friend Elisha, but after that, it was all downhill.

Nothing horrible happened, it was just that we never found our groove. All day Saturday it rained and was cold and miserable, so our plans of moving forward on the garden were put on hold… again. The feeling of standing still with such a big project is frustrating. On top of that, Emil was a sleep thief again. We have been struggling just to get him to go down each night. After a restless, wakeful night, he wakes up for good at 5am and is miserable. DSC_0014DSC_0036Andrew had to work all day Sunday, but at least the rain held out. I took the boys on a nice long walk, and we stopped by Winslow’s Home for a quick breakfast (their scones just never, ever disappoint!). Pushing the stroller through big muddy puddles with a nice big cup of coffee in my other hand made things a bit more pleasant. I tried to adjust my attitude, but it was just a hard, long day. But you know, not every weekend can be the best weekend ever! DSC_0039DSC_0049DSC_0051Tomorrow I have a bunch of meal ideas for you… seven, to be exact. And if you would be so kind as to return here with your top 2 or 3 and leave them in the comments box, I figure we will have some great ideas for next week’s meals! What d’ya say?

Happy Monday!

Weekend Shenanigans: A Feast With Friends

DSC_0033DSC_0029DSC_0032My heart is so full as I write this… it seems that with a few good sunny warm days of working in the garden and the kitchen, and sharing good food with close friends, life is really really good. I am grateful for an abundance of beautiful local produce and the means with which to cook it and the money to buy it (and soon to grow it!). I am grateful for healthy, happy children who share space and toys and laughter with other joyful, loving children. I am grateful for the comfort and peace-of-mind that a clean and cared-for home provides. I am grateful for a partner who happily asks, “What can I do to help?” not only in the middle of the night with a screaming toddler, but also during the day with chores and childcare and everything in-between. DSC_0031DSC_0037I am grateful for friends who let me “borrow” their delicious baby girl so that I can satisfy my baby fix without… you know, going there. DSC_0052DSC_0054DSC_0002I am grateful that we found these baby bunnies before our dog did! And they are looking even cuter, if that is possible, since opening their eyes yesterday! DSC_0055DSC_0047

Don’t do it, Emil

I am grateful for good, strong immune systems. Because he did it.

DSC_0057DSC_0059

I am grateful for simple. Because roasting baby carrots in their skins with olive oil, salt, and rosemary makes for a delightful treat. DSC_0060

I am grateful for this life. I am not worthy of it, and I cherish it.

Favorite Places: U City Public Library

DSC_0032DSC_0049DSC_0044

When I was a kid, I was lucky enough to live right across the street from our neighborhood’s public library. It was an incredibly small and cozy place where my brother and I spent hour upon hour after school. I have very fond memories of sitting cross-legged in a random aisle, absorbed in books, unable to put down one after another. I lost track of time on more than one occasion. And I remember feeling greedy about all the knowledge that was at my fingertips. Shelves of books were like gold to me.

DSC_0021DSC_0024

And you know what? Nothing has changed. I still feel that sense of awe whenever I enter a library. It’s like I’ve hit the jackpot– all these books, and I can just check them out for free?!!

My boys are exhibiting signs of the love of the public library already. We have a big blue reusable bag that is sturdy enough to accommodate more than 20 books, and it is a struggle to narrow it down to that few sometimes! But the point is, they are becoming lovers of books, and that makes me so happy.

DSC_0025DSC_0027DSC_0030

Our local library is not across the street from our house, but it may as well be. In the warmer months, we walk there with a wagon or stroller, and the children’s librarians all know us by name. They know what books Milo and Oliver are into, and make recommendations accordingly. It is one sense of community that I cherish in a world that often seems too big for my little guys.

The children’s area is upstairs, where there are not only rows and rows of books by some pretty awesome authors, but puzzles, games, stuffed animals, a few “reading bathtubs,” and a fish tank! It is a destination for us, especially on cold or rainy days.

DSC_0034DSC_0038

We start upstairs in the children’s area. The boys do puzzles and collect books, and if Emil is up for sitting still, we even get to read a few (usually cuddled up on the giant bear’s lap). After that, we go on a “walkabout” around the library, during which the boys practice their best library voices while exploring the mazes of shelves, sculptures, and interesting nooks and crannies.

DSC_0041DSC_0050DSC_0052

We end back downstairs, to give the city mascot a smooch or a pat, then check out our books before heading home to devour story after story. The library is a place I hope we always have access to, no matter how internet-based this world becomes.

Do you hang out at your local library? Donate to it? Enjoy it? If not, you should at least check it out. You might be pleasantly surprised!

Weekend Shenanigans

DSC_0062

Though it rained for most of the weekend, two little boys clearly started feeling better (the antibiotics kicked in by Friday evening), sleeping better, and acting happier. Between rainfall, we spent every dry moment outdoors in 60-degree weather. We took a nice afternoon walk to the Loop for a shared smoothie and some sunshine on our faces; Milo and Oliver rode in the double stroller and Emil alternated between walking and riding on my back.

DSC_0038DSC_0021DSC_0010

But most of the weekend was spent indoors while the rain came down in sheets just beyond our windows. Emil was still pretty cranky and obviously not completely recovered, but Oliver’s mood was greatly improved. He found his manners and was agreeable and loving and cuddly all weekend long. Thank goodness!

DSC_0003DSC_0048DSC_0070

On Saturday night, my wonderful friend Ingrid snuck me out of the house for a couple of hours after the kids went to bed. We went to The Fountain, which I vowed to check out again in daylight. Seems very kid-friendly, and their ice cream martinis (!) are amazing! It was hard to stop at just one…

DSC_0071

… and I had a lot more pictures to share from the weekend; unfortunately, Flickr is acting up and I was unable to retrieve them this time around. I’m hoping the issue is resolved soon (poor Andrew was trying to figure out what was wrong for so long last night, as I certainly had no idea where to start)! If not, I’ll be up and posting as soon as I can!

I am feeling rejuvenated after such a restful weekend, and feel like a whole new person. Thank you for all of your kind comments on Friday’s post. It is so good to hear that others are going through similar things- especially with such young kids.

Weekend Shenanigans: The Perfect Snow

DSC_0109DSC_0019DSC_0001DSC_0005

Last Thursday, we got a pretty good amount of snow. Enough to close the boys’ preschool on Thursday and need to shovel the car out the next morning. It was strange snow; the kind that falls in huge chunks and looks like fluffy cotton suspended in the air, followed by sleet and freezing rain which created a nice ice crust on the top. Strange snow, but perfect for sledding, as we found out Saturday morning.

DSC_0020DSC_0026DSC_0029

So early Saturday morning, we pulled the boys to Winslow’s Home for hot drinks, then pulled them back up the hill to the field next to their future elementary school for some serious sledding. The sun came out mid-morning and man was it bright! But the sunshine made the cold not-so-cold, so it was just the right kind of weather for hurling your body down an icy hill.

DSC_0031DSC_0045DSC_0048DSC_0049DSC_0054DSC_0058DSC_0066DSC_0076DSC_0088DSC_0096

We stayed all morning, skipping Emil’s nap and only pulling ourselves away when exhaustion and hunger led us to believe it was somewhere near lunchtime. We must have been a spectacle: all five of us laughing and acting so goofy and screaming bloody murder while we swooshed down the hill. When the boys are all a bit older, we will brave the bigger hills, like the infamous Art Museum hill. But for now, Emil’s loud chuckles led us to believe that we chose a good spot!

Saturday afternoon we spent with friends Elisha and JJ and their sweet girls, eating the best guacamole I’ve ever had, messing around with mustaches and bow ties and glasses party favors, and oooing and ahhhing over Elisha’s craftiness (she recently built a new kitchen table out of reclaimed wood- it was gorgeous!) until Oliver pulled out the old naughty card and we had to go home early.

DSC_0131DSC_0134DSC_0138DSC_0145DSC_0146DSC_0121

Oh, and we brought over these cream puffs, the recipe of which I will be happy to share with you tomorrow if you’d like?

DSC_0008

So I guess I can say that though we are almost through all of our firewood that we had collected (for free… more on that later) last summer, and the snow is mostly turned to slush by now, and I am ready to feel cool grass and squishy mud under my bare feet… we were truly joyful this weekend at our sledding luck. Hope you had a good one too!

Weekend Shenanigans/A Very Happy Birthday

DSC_0221DSC_0238

This weekend was so full of joy and laughter and I was completely filled to the brim with gratefulness for so many things in my life. Coming off of a wonderful night out with my friend Ingrid, we made a pact to get our families together soon… and soon ended up being this weekend! Saturday morning was spent by a warm and toasty fire, playing and building and reading with the kids before we headed over to Ingrid and Brent’s house for the afternoon and evening.

DSC_0039DSC_0043DSC_0054DSC_0069DSC_0073DSC_0078DSC_0071

I know I’ve talked about them before on the blog, but I really must reiterate that these two have made life in St. Louis exponentially better for us. They are the sweetest, funniest, most endearing people you will ever meet and we always leave gushing about our friends and how much we truly love them. Their kids too!

DSC_0048DSC_0088DSC_0114DSC_0134DSC_0101DSC_0136DSC_0143DSC_0173DSC_0183DSC_0185DSC_0083

We left later than we should have, but earlier than anyone wanted, as usual, talking of dreams of the future, going on a family vacation together so the night doesn’t have to end, as we swept our crew out into the cold night, not a snowflake in the air…

I awoke to a brightness that I figured was just my lazy sleeping-in birthday sunshine, but it was a good deal of beautiful snow covering everything! The weekend just kept getting better and better. After a slow shower (where I actually shaved both legs) I rallied the troops to get suited up for a walk to breakfast down the road. The snow made us all giddy… there’s just nothing better!

DSC_0206DSC_0212DSC_0218DSC_0223

Emil was oohing and aahing from his carrier on my back while Milo and Oliver hitched a ride on the sled (a wonderful gift from Andrew’s stepmom Gerlyn a few years ago). Our laughter echoed through the trees and the kids’ squeals of joy filled me with happiness and love. I wondered if everyone has this much fun with their kids. We enjoy them so very very much!

St. Martin’s Day Neighborhood Celebration

DSC_0002DSC_0003DSC_0007DSC_0009

Our German neighbors have introduced the most fun tradition to our neighborhood! For the past 3 years, they have hosted a St. Martin’s Day celebration (read more here), full of good food, decorating lanterns, mulled wine and warm cider, and a parade to the lion statue in the park a few blocks away… followed by a little chocolate coin treasure hunt in the dark. This year there were more kids (and chaos) than ever, which of course means we all had a blast.

DSC_0013DSC_0017DSC_0019DSC_0025DSC_0031

It really is magical every time I see the line of glowing lanterns marching down our street on some November night. Does your neighborhood partake in any traditions? We took over one tradition and hope to keep the annual summer party alive… it’s so much fun to hang with the locals, don’t you think?

Come on, Weekend!

DSC_0005DSC_0006

The weekend is upon us again! We are in store for some beautiful weather on Saturday, so I am trying to figure out how best to enjoy it with the boys. Andrew is working all weekend but will at least be around in the early morning for some relief. After a grouchy start to our morning, I am hoping to get on his good side again (oops- bad mama). But today has shaped up to be beautiful! It’s warm and pleasant, and I was reminded of just how lucky I am to be able to stay at home and live my everyday life with these three little rascals– especially when we have pizza picnics and play in the yard all day!

Happy weekend.
