{"id":3044,"date":"2012-08-03T06:00:24","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T11:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crumbbums.com\/?p=3044"},"modified":"2016-09-27T12:42:56","modified_gmt":"2016-09-27T17:42:56","slug":"yummy-stuff-puff-pastry-quiche-with-chard-red-onion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crumbbums.com\/?p=3044","title":{"rendered":"Yummy Stuff: Puff Pastry Quiche with Chard &#038; Red Onion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8294\/7695000452_b0c064d7ff_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0042\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Always looking for the next food item in which I can use up a huge bunch of greens, and finding myself with a whole lot of eggs rounding out the end of the week, I thought\u00a0<em>hey!\u00a0<\/em>what better way to use up some good whole ingredients than to bake a quiche?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.static.flickr.com\/7268\/7694997138_ae58f76aef_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0002\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I had everything I needed in the fridge (including a great supply of local milk courtesy of an out-of-town Ingrid &amp; Brent\u00a0<em>&#8212; thanks you guys!!!)\u00a0<\/em>or in the garden\u00a0<em>ahem more swiss chard<\/em> except for the puff pastry, which I bought at Whole Foods in the freezer section, in case you were wondering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>6 eggs<\/li>\n<li>1 cup whole milk<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 red onion, sliced<\/li>\n<li>2 Tbsp butter<\/li>\n<li>12 large chard leaves, tough stems removed<\/li>\n<li>1 cup to 1 1\/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese (gruyere would be awesome too)<\/li>\n<li>puff pastry (make your own, buy it, or use your favorite regular pie crust recipe&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/projectlittlesmith.blogspot.com\/2012\/05\/strawberry-rhubarb-pie.html\" target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a> looks amazing, don&#8217;t you think? If only I were brave enough to attempt crust&#8230;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8163\/7694997622_5b1c1bc2f7_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0003\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8427\/7694998112_2b176bdc77_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0005\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rinse chard, remove tough stems, and cut leaves into thin ribbons. Place in a pot of water, bring to boil, and cook 5 &#8211; 10 minutes until tender. Drain, then squeeze out the water and set aside.<\/p>\n<p>Now, for that crust. I read several recipes that used puff pastry as a quiche crust and they\u00a0<em>swore up and down\u00a0<\/em>that it wouldn&#8217;t need to be blind-baked. However. My crust was underdone on the bottom, so I would recommend blind-baking yours for at least 10 minutes in a 400-degree oven. So get to it. Oh, but before you do that, spray a springform pan with cooking spray, then place puff pastry inside, letting some overlap the edges of the pan. Trim excess pastry and store in fridge for some other delicious treat!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8026\/7694998578_0e9e4ccac5_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0012\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 400. Meanwhile, saut\u00e9 red onion in butter over medium heat until browned and sweet and tender:<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8024\/7694999050_0cea2c5d14_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0016\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then add chard and cook for 5 minutes more.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8431\/7694999598_be52e37965_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0019\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whisk together eggs, milk, and grated cheese, and add salt to taste. Add chard &amp; onion mixture to egg &amp; milk mixture, and pour into your\u00a0<em>blind-baked\u00a0<\/em>pie crust.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8145\/7695000078_51191fb274_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0022\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Set pan on a cookie sheet to catch the drippings, and cook at 400 for 45 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and quiche is set.<\/p>\n<p>We ate almost the entire thing between Andrew and me.
