Many of them we used for decorating packages, but some we set aside for a different project: sparkly pinecone ornaments! It was only moderately messy, easy, and perfect for age 3 and up. Here&#8217;s what you&#8217;ll need:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8202\/8247831317_c4df8047ed_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0026\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Several pinecones (dry)<\/li>\n<li>thread, string, or jute for hanging<\/li>\n<li>a plastic baggie that zips shut (or two, or three, depending on how many people want to work at the same time)<\/li>\n<li>multi-purpose glue or crafting glue<\/li>\n<li>scissors<\/li>\n<li>a cut-up grocery bag (optional: for containing the mess)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8485\/8248899348_c293a8f91c_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0029\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step One<\/strong>: coat the first pinecone in glue. I allowed the boys to pour the glue on first, then spread it around with their grubby little fingers to cover each pinecone in a thin layer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8208\/8247831917_19eec6cea2_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0030\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8349\/8247832563_718048b10a_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0039\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8062\/8247832139_3a495495f9_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0031\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8487\/8248900068_42e6684f3c_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0033\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Apparently, this is really really super fun, as Milo exclaimed; &#8220;Mama! You&#8217;re the BEST! This is so awesome! I love it!&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>He makes it so easy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Step Two<\/strong>: Fill a plastic baggie with glitter (we used Martha Stewart&#8217;s &#8220;white gold&#8221; glitter, which is more like glitter <em>dust<\/em>, so be careful about pouring because I imagine inhaling this or getting it in your eyes would be quite unpleasant), then drop the glue-covered pinecone into the bag. Close tightly, then shake the bag like the dickens until all the gluey parts are covered in glitter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8066\/8248900154_38b990ca42_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0035\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8209\/8248900410_772971466a_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0042\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Three<\/strong>: Open bag carefully, tap glittered pinecone several times while still in the bag to remove excess glitter, and remove pinecone. Set aside to dry completely.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8349\/8248900686_493b33915e_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0043\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8204\/8248900908_63d096241e_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0046\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step Four<\/strong>: Repeat with each remaining pinecone, or until your fingers are so stuck together and sparkly that you can&#8217;t take it anymore. We managed 14 before Oliver jumped ship, Milo lost interest, and I shooed them out of the room (after scrubbing their sparkly fairy hands with the kitchen scrub brush and warm water, of course). I finished the last 3 by myself, and honestly, I can&#8217;t tell the difference between the ones they did and the ones I did. It&#8217;s that kid-friendly! Also, it only took about 20 minutes start to finish.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8210\/8248901164_b70965df46_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0049\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The mess. Not as bad as I expected!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.static.flickr.com\/8346\/8247833859_73e0373574_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0054\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>And easy to clean up&#8230; simply roll the paper bag onto itself and the glue will hold it shut so you can transport it to the trash when pinecones are dry.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Step Five:\u00a0<\/strong>Tie thread or string around the top of each pinecone in a loop large enough to fit over a tree branch.
