The birthday craze is over. I suppose because of last year’s activity level (non-existent really, because of Oliver’s birth) we didn’t do much for Andrew’s birthday, and had just a small family gathering (of me, Andrew, Oliver, and Milo) for Milo’s second birthday. I suppose because of this, I didn’t fully understand what it would be to have 3 birthdays, relatively equally spaced out, over the course of four weeks. Doesn’t sound like much, but think of the cake! A cake nearly every weekend?! It lasts all week, because who is going to eat an entire cake at a one-year-old’s birthday, or even a thirty-year-old’s birthday? Hence, cupcakes for Milo’s 3rd celebration. I am sorry, buddy. But I am just all caked out. No. More. Cake.<\/p>\n

But this year, we celebrated how we should. We took Milo’s birthday, which fell on Labor Day weekend this year, as an opportunity to invite half the neighborhood over. The plan was for a water-themed party, as the planning took place during a bit of a heat wave, but once we actually made it to September 4th, the weather was delightfully cooler. So we scaled back on the water balloons, sprinklers, swimming pools, etc. and just threw a bunch of toys in the backyard for the young ones, beer in the cooler for the old(er) ones. Worked like a charm.<\/p>\n

Oliver clearly didn’t get the memo.<\/em><\/p>\n

And had decided, cool weather be darned, that there would be no rain on his parade unless it be man<\/span> girl-made.<\/em><\/p>\n

How do I have a three-year-old? Seriously. Feeling crazy old.<\/em><\/p>\n

Actually, this is Pierce, Milo’s second cousin, and there was no dueling. They are perpetually, predictably, on the same team. Always.<\/em><\/p>\n

And added bonus: my mom blew in with the beautiful weather and made everything so much easier, more fun, more relaxed. Somehow, the tricky granny didn’t make it into ANY of the pictures. Somehow, the three-day weekend ended before any of us were ready, leaving Milo asking, “Where’s Grandma?” and “Why isn’t it polite to ask where someone’s vagina is?” Two clearly unrelated, but equally important questions.<\/p>\n
