{"id":8737,"date":"2015-02-17T05:00:02","date_gmt":"2015-02-17T11:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.crumbbums.com\/?p=8737"},"modified":"2016-09-07T14:06:59","modified_gmt":"2016-09-07T19:06:59","slug":"reading-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.crumbbums.com\/?p=8737","title":{"rendered":"Reading&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"DSC_0042\" href=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7420\/16537410731_6c69f3b2f5_s.jpg\" rel=\"\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"DSC_0042\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7420\/16537410731_6c69f3b2f5_b.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0042\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Wild-Life-Our-Bodies-Predators\/dp\/0061806463\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1424040920&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=the+wild+life+of+our+bodies\" target=\"_blank\">The Wild Life of Our Bodies<\/a>: Predators, Parasites, and Partners that Shape Who We are Today, by Rob Dunn<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I fear that the sheer number of pop science-type books I post about might have some of you rolling your eyes.\u00a0<em>Oh great, another book about gross body stuff.\u00a0<\/em>And I think I get it; after spending a good solid 10 minutes chatting with a girlfriend about my girlhood skull collection and exactly how I obtained\u00a0<em>that many\u00a0<\/em>bones (a discussion for another day if you&#8217;re curious), I pressed my lips together and decided that not everyone understands the obsession, willing myself back into normal chit chat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This book grabbed me first by the beautiful cover art, but once I read the cover and skimmed through the chapters (eyes growing wide at\u00a0<em>I Need My Appendix, and So Do My Bacteria\u00a0<\/em>and eyebrows raised at\u00a0<em>The Dirty Realities of What to Do When You Are Sick and Missing Your Worms).\u00a0<\/em>Beyond the shock value, the book is really good \u2014 a mishmash of medicine, biology, ecology, and evolution that I find so appealing. There&#8217;s also plenty about the consequences of modern living on human bodies, including some interesting talk about why we are becoming fatter as a society\u2014 but overall the appeal has to do with a general perspective change in how we view humans (as being just as wild and inhabited by other species as opposed to being separate from them).
