Happy St. Martin’s Day!<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the benefits of living close to a university is that the population tends to be slightly more diverse than the rest of, oh, say, Missouri. Such diversity even includes a few European transfers. And, thanks to our German neighbor and his American wife and bilingual child who actually wears lederhosen<\/a> (which, if you did not know, looks absolutely adorable on two-year-old boys)… we were invited to celebrate a German holiday today!<\/p>\n

To make a long story short, St. Martin’s Day is basically a day to celebrate a really kind dude who, in the midst of a snowstorm, split his cloak in half to share with someone less fortunate than he. Originally a Catholic holiday, St. Martin’s Day has now become a mainstream German thing, including lanterns and songs and men in red capes. Read more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

And so, we decorated lanterns along with cookies, then trekked out into the beautiful evening weather (seriously, 75 in November?!) and down to the school, then to one of our city’s many, many, many lion statues. A nice mascot indeed. And a very nice tradition!<\/p>\n
