Gardening on My Mind

We’ve had the warmest February I can ever remember. Everything has greened up, with crocuses and daffodils blooming, wild onions sprouting up, and buds on the trees on the verge of blooming. All of the nice weather has inspired me to get out into the garden, weeding and prepping the beds for planting (which is still quite awhile away). Before I really dive in, I’ve been doing some planning to change things up a bit for this coming growing season.

In the meantime, here are a few fun gardening things. Above, a trick for keeping dirt from getting way up under your nails: scrape your nails over a bar of soap just before gardening. That way, the soap blocks the dirt! I personally hate gardening gloves, so I have perpetual dirt under my nails. I’m definitely going to try this!

We’ve had a bean teepee before, but I really like the idea of the above garden structure, found here. This site also has specific instructions on lashing, such the tripod lashing seen below:

Something else I’d like to experiment with is the use of Epsom salt (hydrated magnesium sulphate) in controlling pests in the garden, and as a natural fertilizer. Sprinkled around the base of plants, it will keep slugs at bay. Diluted in water (1 Tbsp per gallon of water), it promotes sweeter, tastier veggies and fruits!

I’m also looking into weed management. I think the above gravel path is so pretty, and would keep weeds at bay (or at least make them easier to pull). This year, I’m also planning to plant lots of flowers among the veggies, including some edible ones. The yarrow we planted last year has multiplied and is already sprouting up along our garden path. It’s so exciting to see the garden coming alive again!

I’m so ready to get growing!

    1. I’m afraid I don’t have any advice – we are located in a more urban neighborhood, so deer are not a problem! That is tricky, because as I understand, they even jump fences?

  1. The grave paths look really beautiful! You really did a great job! I get inspired by your garden a lot! I’ll try make one cool for myself!
