Dress That Mama: Transitioning to Fall (1)

Howdy! I have decided to continue the outfit posts, thanks to some lovely support, positive feedback (thanks for that!), and nice cool (inspiring) fall weather around these parts. There’s something so uninspiring to me about 90-degree weather over the summer… maybe it has to do with the fact that all you want to wear is… well, nothing?

But now that the heat has pretty much left the area, I am using my favorite summer pieces to compliment my fall clothing. The two things that made the cut: my favorite Uzi cotton tank and the triangle necklace I bought off of Etsy years ago. I’m sure you are sick of seeing both, but such is the life of one with a minimalist wardrobe. I wore the heck out of both these things this whole summer long and am still not sick of them, so I suppose I made a good choice. Buy what you absolutely love, keep coming back to, and know is well-made. Stick with a color palette (for me, it’s definitely neutrals) that you feel comfortable in, and are drawn to. If you do that, everything else seems to fall into place.

DSC_0017And speaking of well made, the shoes. After I cracked in half my favorite pair of Rachel Comey shoes in a car accident earlier this summer, my mom so kindly replaced them with these boots by the same designer. They are no longer in stock, but I can not say enough wonderful things about these shoes. The leather is like butter, they require absolutely no breaking in, and the style is simple and minimalist, which I always believe will outlast the trends. Thank you, Mom, for your generous gift. I have been wearing the heck out of these, receiving tons of compliments on them, and feeling comfortable walking miles and miles.

Do you have a favorite shoe designer? Have you found a brand that lasts and wears well? Are you a heels or flats person? I am generally in flats, but I do enjoy a little heel on my boots if I’m going to a show or out to dinner with friends. What are you transitioning into your fall wardrobe?

  1. I love your style & the idea of a minimalist wardrobe! Any tips on how to get there? Right now I have clothes I haven’t worn since I got pregnant with A (5 years! I should get rid of them.), clothes from when we lived in Florida (not practical as we live in Michigan now, but I love some of them), and clothes from last winter right after C was born when I was a few sizes bigger than I am now but couldn’t stand to wear maternity clothes anymore.
Getting rid of too much seems like a mistake, as I can’t afford to buy a whole new wardrobe, even a small one. Advice please! πŸ™‚

  2. Yay! Glad you’re continuing the posts. I have been admiring your boots and was wondering if you will talk about them any time soon:)…so happy you shared! I’ve been searching for a pair that I can wear through this transitional period. Here in Vermont autumn is dreamy and I love spending time outdoors in comfy but stylish pieces. I love anoraks and bulky cotton sweaters for this time of year:) Cheers!

  3. I missed the initial post (internets brake), but I have to say that I loudly second keeping the Dress That Mama posts around. For one thing, your blog has such a sweet balance of mothering, homemaking, music, style, it’s exactly the kind of blog I’d like to see more around; not too polished, warm, stylish, just like I imagine you to be in person! For another, even though you and I have completely different styles and stylings I’m still totally inspired by what you wear. A minimalist in no way, I love your simple elegance that’s still not boring. Love it. Also, those shoes are amazing. I’m definitely a flats girl, but a little heel in boots is swell. Happy fall, dear! I’m a gonna go back track through all the posts I missed β™‘

  4. You have definitely inspired me to have a more neutral wardrobe! I have been loving mixing neutrals with a pop of color. My favorites are currently a lovely hunter green cardigan, and a tan cardigan with chartreuse piping. I also love pairing a bold scarf with a neutral dress. Nordstrom released a video with scarf tying ideas (it’s on YouTube), which has been fun to try out.

Those boots are to die for! I LOVE cognac colored leather – it goes with so much and always looks trendy and chic.

  5. You look so cute and so happy here! I am so glad to hear that you got your broken shoes replaced(ish)! Those boots are amazing! I splurged last year on a pair of Frye riding boots that I wore and will wear non-stop for years to come! It is so great when you find something that you love so much!!!

  6. You look stylish and ready to go– jeans and boots are so game! So glad you’re doing these fashion moments! On my list of wants for fall are high waisted jeans and chunky cropped sweater!

  7. I feel exactly the same way about summer. There are no summer clothes that excite me – sweaters are my favorite along with cords and jeans. And there is nothing quite like a t-shirt that is cut and hangs exactly right! I don’t know that I have a favorite shoe designer (or that my shoes warrant a designer mention) but right now I’m wearing the Born Ilisha sneakers to death πŸ™‚
