How Does Your Garden Grow

Thanks to some lovely sunshine and plenty of rain, our garden veggies are growing in leaps and bounds! Above is a variety of spinach that can withstand higher heat (an Asian variety I can’t remember the name of- sorry!) and also happens to climb. I think it is so pretty with the vibrant stem and thick leaves.

And yesterday! Pretty amazing, really. I could spend hours in there weeding and tending to things and I’d be a happy lady. DSC_0028

We have had a pretty exciting week… I will hopefully share more details soon, but things around here have been anything but dull. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

  1. That spinach looks gorgeous. I’m growing New Zealand “spinach” this summer, which can withstand heat and so it can grow all summer long. However, it doesn’t look near as pretty as yours.

  2. Your garden looks like it’s coming along wonderfully. I’m trying to grow some stuff on our balcony this year – I hope my plants fair as well as yours!

  3. Dang, that’s a fruitful garden alright! I could use some simple pointers for gardening success. First of all we have a MAJOR deer problem with no proper fences, and then we never know when or even how really, to plant! We long for kale like this. Maybe I should search your blog, have you ever done a DIY post on successful backyard vegetable gardening?

Also I can’t wait to hear what’s up in your household!

  4. Heather! I love that you are interested in starting a veggie garden! I would say start small, but it sounds like you need a fence, and if you’re going to build a fence, might as well go all in or it wouldn’t be worth it.

I don’t know about deer- but I’ve heard that they can jump pretty high if they are motivated to do so. Maybe ask some gardeners around your neck of the woods (no pun intended)? But I’d definitely say to go for it. We’ve toyed with the idea of covering the top of our garden with a fine mesh netting to keep out squirrels. That might also work for deer.

Also, kale loves soil rich in organic material, such as the rotten leaves you probably have at hand from all the woods near your home. If you have a spot in your yard that gets full sun, I would start there! I have not done a post on starting a back yard garden, but maybe I should. Good luck getting started! 🙂

  5. Damn. That hot hot heat seems to be serving your plants well. Not to mention your green thumb. My green beans haven’t even sprouted. Most things we started from seed are struggling while the starts are doing awesome. Our tomatoes are abysmal, but that’s okay, I didn’t really want to even grow them anyways, we know so many master tomato growers with greenhouses that I don’t care. I’m just happy to have my lettuce and flowers and peas. And, lord willing, squash. Happy garden season girlfriend!
