Dress That Mama

DSC_0085Yes, this skirt again! I imagine Dress That Mama gets a little dull for some of you out there, as many of my clothes are on repeat around here with little variations on the same theme. But I feel that I should be honest here. I actually feel quite unsettled when I happen upon those fashion blogs where one woman wears a different outfit every day of the week and posts them every single day — a completely different, brand new outfit. I find my mind traveling to a crazy place… a place of excess. Where does one keep all those clothes and shoes? What is it like to open a closet, heck, an entire room full of clothing to get dressed in the morning? For me it would feel like panic. And a bit of shame. And maybe dissatisfaction?

So yes, it’s boring around here. I wear this skirt twice a week at least — to dinners and breakfasts, birthday parties and pool parties. And jean shorts another two days. And maybe a dress, or jeans or jumpsuit if it’s cool enough. But if you are still getting anything out of these posts, let me know. I hate to beat a dead horse…

How about you? What’s the one thing you find yourself putting on over and over again these days?

  1. I love being able to open my closet and see all that I have hanging and folded above. I too own a small collection of clothing but feel that each piece can match the other. I love that you show how one piece has so much variety.
One thing that struck me when I moved to the US is that people never wear one item two days in a row. Maybe outerwear or scarfs but shirts, sweaters, pants I don’t ever see on two days in a row. While living in Europe I saw people not paying much attention to that, they wear things two days in a row all the time. I wonder why that is sometimes?

  2. I’m in the midst of a major purge/closet overhaul. I don’t know if it’s age or this new stage of my life but the idea of a pared wardrobe made up of quality basics and pieces I adore is an idea that I’m embracing!

  3. I enjoy these posts, which is saying something because I have zero desire to follow anyone else’s fashion posts. I just really don’t care that much about clothing. I like the simplicity of your wardrobe – if I could be a little more casual in my everyday wear, I imagine I’d be pretty similar.

Alma, I wear clothes again, and often. It’s always seemed ridiculous to me to launder everything when it’s not even messy. I have a few pairs of pants that I wear over and over again, and just switch out the top or sweater. My girls play pretty hard, so I wash their clothes daily, but things like pjs or clothes worn on “indoor days” get folded on the bed and worn again.

  4. While clothing and fashion are at the absolute bottom of my list of important things, I like these posts exactly for their simplicity and restraint. I guess I like the idea of full lives but practically empty closets.

  5. Alma is right, I was surprised in Belgium to find that my friends, even the ones who were really into clothes and appearances, would sometimes wear the exact same outfit for 3 days straight. They would go to work and go out for dinner and just generally be seen, and oftentimes it was not a neutral outfit–it would be yellow pants and an equally hard-to-forget top. I sort of envy the ability to do that, because I have to restrain myself from changing midday, just because my mood changed.

And then there’s this lady, who wore the same dress for an entire year: http://theuniformproject.com/upweb/#!about

  6. I very much enjoy these posts! You seem to get some new items with the change of the season, so it’s fun to see how you rework them in different ways over that season and with the changing temperatures. Also, I enjoy seeing how you *style* the items, not just the items themselves, so there is still plenty of variety! I totally use you as style inspiration all the time.

  7. Please, please, do continue those posts. As I am from Germany, I have to agree with Almas observation. Even though I always wear a different outfit each day (and am sometimes puzzled by women who don’t, to the point that I once asked a co-worker whether she had spent the night away from home because she was wearing the exact same clothes as the day before;)), I am intrigued by the simplicity of wearing and owning a smaller number of pieces.
There is a German journalist who did a project in 2010 I think where she wore the exact same blue dress every single day, if you’re interested you can check it out here:

  8. Love your clothing philosophy ๐Ÿ™‚ I recently mailed a bunch of stuff to thredup.com and used the payout money to invest in a couple key items (one of which are boots i have been wearing daily despite the end-of-summer heat). I love seeing the different combinations you create!

  9. Alma, I was thinking the exact same thing when I read this post. When i spent some time in France a few years ago I noticed that my very chic neighbors and friends mostly all wore the same exact outfit or main elements of it a few days in a row – some longer! No big deal. And I’ve just discovered your blog and love your “dress that mama” section the best ๐Ÿ™‚ Especially because it seems realistic!
