Llamas and Ducks and…. Zebras? Oh, My

Okay, still behind, but I’ll get there eventually.

My little summer elf

Milo and I had a fantastic day last Thursday when we trekked to Mary’s father-in-law and girlfriend’s house about an hour northwest of Baltimore. We were treated to a lovely pool, delicious lunch, huge open house for the boys to explore, and the best part, the company.

Excited to go on a walk in the suburbs…

Who knew there was a petting zoo just down the street?
(Please ignore my sweaty, ratty hair… it was really hot, okay?!)

On this walk, we discovered that the neighbors down the street had a virtual zoo in their back yard, complete with ducks, guinea pigs, llamas, emus, and zebras. Apparently you can raise zebras in your backyard. Makes me wonder what else is out there… an elephant? Giraffe? Legal or not, the owners were very kind and encouraged us to get a closer look for the boys. Milo really liked the ducks, especially the black-and-white spotted one.

So of course, another very enjoyable time. I am so lucky to have such a good friend who also has a little boy so close to Milo’s age. It’s been so much fun watching the two of them outgrow true babyhood together. Now that they are both on the move, it’s even more fun to watch them go, go, go! And Ben’s new skill of walking leaves Milo no choice but to go along for the ride…

In true bum style, easy-does-it!
My favorite is Ben’s grunting from the effort of pushing Milo… no fat jokes, please, Milo has slowed down rapidly on the weight gain, thank you very much.

Wedding Wackos

As I try to catch up on the summer’s festivities, I seem perpetually at least a week behind! But pictures are pictures… take ’em or leave ’em!

Over the last weekend in June, Andrew, Milo, and I made the trip to Princeton, NJ to celebrate the wedding of Andrew’s good friend from graduate school, Lisa. Milo was a perfect angel on the 3-hour car ride there, despite hitting some nasty traffic. He was also fantastic at the hotel before the wedding and reception, especially since the hotel had plenty of fun things to do and see (namely huge carpeted areas to crawl around and find specks of dirt and debris to inspect, and hoards of overgrown goldfish to point at).

The wedding itself was in the beautiful Cathedral on Princeton’s campus. Even Milo was enthralled by the ceremony!
Okay… not that enthralled.

When is this thing over?
(In all fairness, the ceremony itself was short and sweet)

Now we get to the good part. The three-hour stretch between the ceremony and the reception proved to be quite trying. The idea was to put an exhausted Milo down for a nap in the hotel room and freshen up (since the summer heat and humidity had left us a bit worse for the wear) while Andrew spent some time with his friends, then meet up in the lobby of the hotel for cocktails before the reception. Milo had different plans, as most babies will when put into a similar situation. So, two hours of off-and-on wailing and angry tears produced no nap, and I gave up and let Milo crawl around the hotel room, shredding toilet paper and plucking out as many tissues from the tissue dispenser as possible before I could stop him. Also, he managed to find a bar of soap in its wrapper, bite through the wrapper, and eat a small chunk of soap. Of course, this lead to more screaming, a bit of vomit, and some whimpering for a while afterwards. I guess I can’t threaten him with washing his mouth out with soap anytime soon. “Been there, done that, Mom.”

We then proceeded to top off our “Parents of the Year” award-worthy night by keeping our child up 3 hours past his bedtime while most adults were consuming too much alcohol and far too much red meat. I only partook in the latter consumption, which made me feel just as ill. (Disclaimer: the food was amazing, AMAZING, and I only felt ill because of my gluttonous choices, so difficult to hold back with such amazing food).

Of course, Milo fell asleep before his head hit the crib that night…

If only he had stayed asleep. Every hour, folks. Screaming. In a hotel room. And the grand finale… even after I brought him into bed with us, our little cherub was wide awake, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 6:00am.

Argument with husband at 3am due to utter exhaustion, check.
Migraine, check.
Long drive home the next morning while still completely exhausted, check.
Lesson learned? Check.

Summer Bum

Posting is so much harder in the summer…. we’re just so busy having fun during the day that I’m too exhausted in the evenings to do much of anything. It also does not help that Milo still has nights (like last night) when he wakes up 3 times!!! So here’s a bit of a catch-up post for the past two weeks.

Milo and I have been taking advantage of all Baltimore has to offer while we are still here. Andrew and I have decided to ramp up the housing search in DC and have found a house in a great neighborhood that we are interested in… but in the meantime, there is so much to do in Baltimore, especially with great friends we have made.

During a recent trip to Port Discovery (a children’s museum in the heart of the Inner Harbor), my friend Mary, her little boy Ben, Milo, and I discovered that there was a lot to do with young kids.

Milo and Ben enjoyed the Music Room, equipped with all sorts of percussion instruments. The big drums were a favorite, of course.

Not sure what to think or do at first

But with the security of “Link,” Milo felt confident

An action shot

Then, on to the Kids-Under-Four room, complete with indoor playground, books, toys, building blocks, and ball pit… though Milo wasn’t so sure about the pit.

Then, on to the water room, where borrowed raincoats kept the little ones… not so dry. But oh, well. It’s the thought that counts.

Really, this place was a blast. We spent 3 hours there and had the boys been a little older, we would have stayed longer. We even went to a storytime there! I’m sure we’ll go back before the summer is over.

Last weekend we trekked down to Harbor East, a little arts festival near some cute shops and restaurants. This time we got to hang out with both families, as the dads joined us.

Could he smile any wider?!

Watch this, Ben!

So we have really been living it up. This weekend we travel to Princeton, NJ for a friend’s wedding, then next week we may be on our way to buying a house!

As far as Milo’s new tricks, he is moving right along. A real pro at climbing stairs, boxes, you name it. Climbing is the new thing. He also continues to enjoy reading, and will now turn the page when asked to. Milo is also learning about social reciprocity and will wave hello or bye-bye to people he sees on the streets, as well as dogs and pictures on our wall and refrigerator. I still can’t seem to get him to clap his hands, mainly because he won’t put down his chosen link long enough to bring his two hands together. He is also drinking from a sippy cup and even drinks formula now (thank God!).

Things Milo does not enjoy… mainly anything that requires sitting still (except reading). So the high chair is hated. Though I know I shouldn’t get into this habit, the only way I can feed him without listening to screaming is the old “drive-by” spoon. I lock us into the kitchen, slap a bib on him, and let him come to me for bites. It works. He eats well.

Bath time is also now dreaded. He used to love bath time, but now he just wants to crawl out of there, or stand up, or climb. I mean, imagine the frustration in having Mom keep plopping you down on your bottom to wash you when you just want to GO!

And speaking of going… Milo is getting a little antsy, so we are off to the park!
I promise I will get some more pictures up soon.

Oh, My Link

Milo has become quite the magician lately.
He cast a spell on his “link” collection, willing them to be with him always.

Yes, Milo has moved on from the loss of his small foam 8. He no longer yearns for his two-holed companion. One zero shape is enough for him now. Instead of a blankie, pacifier, or stuffed animal, Milo has become extremely attached to carrying around a link. Luckily he seems to have no preference any one particular link. Any link will do… green and bumpy, blue and wavy, black with red polka dots, or black-and-white striped. Generally, Milo chooses a different link each day to cherish. Today it was the green and bumpy one. This is where Green and Bumpy Link went today:

Chosen from a pile of all different sorts of links, Green and Bumpy started its day at 6am.
Clutched in the hand while reading several books first thing in the morning.
Held while Milo ate some peach, banana, and oatmeal babyfood.
Had to be rinsed off after getting pretty sticky.
Dragged around the kitchen while Mom cleaned up and Milo listened to music, practiced pulling up, and went through our recycling bin once again.
Accidentally dropped into the recycling bin.
Recovered by Mom after Milo panicked and started to cry.
Taken into the living room for some play time.
Was not put down while Milo played with various other toys, sometimes with the same hand that Green and Bumpy occupied.
Upstairs for a nap, still not put down.
Waking up from nap one hour later, clutched in Milo’s hand while also holding onto the crib standing up, Green and Bumpy was used to bang against the crib to make more noise to get Mom’s attention.
Toted to story hour at Canton Library.
Not put down, not even while Milo held the bells required for a couple of songs, not even after story hour when Milo was free to explore all sorts of other toys, crawling and clutching a mastered skill.
Taken on a stroller ride with friend Ben after story hour.
Held while eating blueberry and apple babyfood and drinking milk.
Held at the park swinging for a half-hour, waved through the air in joy.
Gripped tightly in the sleeping fist of baby in carseat on the way back home.
Carted from room-to-room while Mom cleaned and baby played.
….
I mean, I could go on and on. I kid you not, this baby carried that link around ALL day with him. He would not put it down during his bath. I had to pry it free and let him hold it in his other hand while I washed the hand that held Link all day. He even held it while nursing. He cried when Andrew took it away from him, and immediately stopped when he gave it back. If he accidentally dropped Link, he went back for it before moving on. He is holding onto it right now, as he sleeps in his crib. Yesterday it was Smooth and Purple Link, but I found her discarded beside Milo’s crib this morning. He was so over her. But Green and Bumpy Link… ah, new love.

As Mary put it today, Milo definitely marches to the beat of his own drum. Well said.

One Link-free picture, taken on Thursday:

Father’s Day we had a fantastic time. Andrew, Milo, and I drove to Georgetown and checked out some neighborhoods just North of Andrew’s office (one favorite is just 2 miles north of his office on the river, which would be great for a quick commute on a bike). We then had lunch on the Potomac and walked around to enjoy the lovely weather and our family.

If you look closely, you can see Milo’s chosen link for Father’s day- Wavy Yellow

I apologize for not giving Andrew the recognition he so deserves on Father’s Day. Really, every day is a good day to say thank you to a man who amazes me daily. From the very start, Andrew has been a natural. He knows consistency is key in parenting, and is the most tender, loving father I have ever seen. He also knows how to make Milo laugh like no one else. He senses when I desperately need a break, and gives me time to regroup or even sleep. He supports my decisions, and challenges me to look at the big picture. He often knows what will work for Milo long before I do, but voices his opinions on parenting in such a diplomatic way, and waits patiently for me even when he knows it will work (i.e., letting Milo cry a little bit longer so he can teach himself how to sleep on his own; moving his crib out of our bedroom, which resulted in instantaneous better sleep for all three of us; keeping up trying solid foods and the sippy cup instead of giving up…. the list goes on and on). Andrew kisses and hugs his son, reads to him, plays his guitar and harmonica and sings for him, dances around like a goof, talks to him, sits on the stoop with him, feeds him, tickles him, and teaches him. He is the greatest dad, and Milo and I are the luckiest people in the world to have him.

Okay, this post is officially waaaaaay too long. But for those of you who are hear for the pictures, here are a couple to satisfy you.

Yesterday, Milo practiced the new and favorite skill of page-turning. He loves books…

… And the camera!
