Whew! This word sums up every time I am on my own with the boys. It’s just… whew! We are going on day 4 of 5, and there have been adventures and roller coaster ups and downs… but one thing that we did not let get us down was the weather. It has rained or drizzled or misted nearly all day every day for the past three, but we are looking at some really beautiful warm sunny days ahead. Which means YES to getting the ever-loving darned garden fence built! It will be done. It will be done.
We went out to eat a couple of times, left with two out of three kids screaming once (and probably not the two you would guess), braved the opening day of the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market in the rain and flood, woke up at 5 am every day (no joke. Please. This is no laughing matter), cleaned and organized and did laundry (alright, I did those things while the kids messed up and broke some shit… sorry for offending your delicate ears), built forts, played in puddles at the playground in bare feet before getting nearly drenched on our walk back, played “Professor Experiments” in the bathtub, made yummy food, ate pancakes for dinner… and screamed and yelled a couple of times.. after which Milo walked up to me, rubbed my back, and said, “Mama, what can I do to help?” Yes, I am the adult.
Oh! And after the boys went to bed, I stayed up late working on a little surprise for Andrew when he gets home. If you’re curious, check back tomorrow! Happy Monday.
Solo parenting is hard! This is my week for it, as Wade is in L.A. for eight days starting today. You make it look so awesome though; I should take a lesson from you in getting out and doing fun stuff even with crummy weather.
And screaming happens sometimes. You’re still a great mama. We all need to scream it out once in a while. 🙂
Yes, being on your own with the kids is rough. How do single parents do it? Dave’s going to London for 5 days this week and I’m trying to keep a positive attitude about being alone with a temperamental 4-year-old and a teething 6-month-old. You will be my inspiration! 🙂
Oh, you guys! Good luck! I am sending positive solo-mama vibes your way right now!
First off I love the boys’ pants! The colorful stripes are awesome. And second…. eventhough flying solo was super exhausting just take a look at your pictures and see how happy the boys look! So you’re doing something right 🙂
And it sounds like lots of us mamas are flying solo these days… Greg leaves for California for a week as well. I’m already tired thinking about it!!!
I remember those hard, HARD days of single parenting little kids. If fact, remembering those times makes my whole body just clench up. I promise you that one day, it’s going to get easier. One day you will sleep, and sleep consistently. One day everyone will dress themselves and wipe themselves and bathe themselves all the way by themselves.
Until that blessed day comes, do some deep breathing, say some bad words, and picture how awesome your garden is going to turn out.
Ai yi yi. It is so hard to parent solo.
I have to say that you are an inspiration, getting all 3 boys out, by yourself, in the rain, etc.
My husband travels a bunch. I always think of you when things get tough. (I also yell and say bad words. But I try to think of your blog for inspiration, too.)
Good for you, Lauren. And as soon as Andrew returns (& you give Andrew his surprise), take some time for yourself!

Please, come in!!!
I’m always impressed with how you manage to do fun stuff with the boys and take pictures of it all while on your own. Splashing in those puddles looks like the best time- and looking forward to finding out what the surprise is!
Lauren.. you rock! One day, I’m going to be less stranded (and have more babies!) and I hope then I can rock the fun, awesome, get shit done mom thing half as well as you do. 🙂
You are so good about getting out and about and keeping things fun despite being on your own for the weekend, rainy weather, tired kids…I’m always impressed and inspired.
