Dress That Mama: One Dress, Three Ways

I think these posts are the “fluffiest” part of this blog, meaning, they are superficial and simple and kind of mindless. But it is part of what I enjoy. Style is a part of who I am. As superficial and vain as it may be, it’s a piece of me that I care about. And when I’m completely honest about it, not every day has to hold a meaningful online conversation, right?

Andrew recently got this dress for me, and I think the main selling point for him is that it is sexy in an understated way. What I love about it is the crazy soft fabric and pretty forgiving shape. There’s shirring on the sides so it doesn’t show every little thing. Plus, it’s long enough to be warm in the winter with some leggings or thigh-high stockings. I thought I would share the dress styled three different ways, because with fewer clothing, those pieces you do invest in need to go a long way!

So here it is: one dress, three ways: First (above), all dressed up with some classic black pumps. Despite the material of the dress (jersey cotton) being very casual, I would wear this out on the town on a date with my main man.

Next, dressed down with sneakers, braids, and a casual scarf.

And finally, the winterized version, with warm black leggings, ankle boots, and a warm sweater. Frankly, I wanted to curl up on the couch and take a nap in this last look — so comfortable and cozy!

I think there are 20 other ways to wear this dress, so be lookin’ for it around these parts!

Looking for a similar dress? Here are a few: this one has long sleeves and a really pretty neckline; and I love the cap sleeves on this style. This one has a really pretty ballerina back. Here’s a looser-fitting version with ruching and long sleeves. And for a little less money, this gray version is very pretty. Happy Wednesday!

  1. Having the killer bod is key to this ensemble. However, ironically, I had purchased two of the recommendations you list last week! This bodes well …

  2. absolutely lovely (as always!). love these posts, love that you share this totally fluffy but, let’s be real, necessary part of life.
i catch myself descending into looking like a slob way too often: between bike commuting and a forgiving job where half of my coworkers either look like they are still living in the grunge era, or being “mad scientists”, or just wearing lab coats around, it’s just too easy.

i love your ideas for looking polished!

  3. First of all: I have those pumps! Oldies but goodies. πŸ˜‰

Second: I enjoy these posts and don’t find them fluffy; style is just another way of expressing your personality — which shines through in your home, your interactions with your kids, your hobbies, etc. As part of that mix, it all makes sense! And I love how you manage to keep it simple but sleek: One of my goals for fall is to pare down my wardrobe to just the things I need and love, and simple, well-made, versatile pieces like this would play a big role in that, I think.

Anyway, you look rad. Keep ’em coming! πŸ˜‰

  4. These posts have been a big inspiration to me and my style. Your approach to a thoughtful wardrobe has helped me make better, greener, more frugal, and more stylish changes to my own closet. Don’t sell yourself short lady, these post are useful and so fun!! Thank you!

  5. Gorgeous girl in a gorgeous dress. Where did Andrew get it? I prefer it to the ones on your links. Also, what a thoughtful husband…xo

  6. Super sexy dress, and perfect on your slim bod! I don’t find fashion posts anymore superficial than cooking or home design… What becomes a turn off for me (and I see this primarily on the infamous instagram), is the preoccupation with certain brands of clothing (or kid’s clothing!) or housewares… and then it all gives way to the new buzz brand a few months later. Of course there are always trends that resonate with each of us, but there’s a line for me. You do a great job of actually being ‘on trend’, but still being true to your own sense of style. I probably would never spend more than $100 on a dress for myself, but I would spend way more than most on outdoor gear or a piece of pottery I’m obsessing over. I like when it feels like someone is thoughtful with their splurges, and choosing something of quality that isn’t just going to get cast in a heap next season. I feel your love for each of your clothes, shoes, and accessories… You look great, take pride πŸ™‚
