Dress That Mama

DSC_0018

I know it’s time to add a bit more color into my wardrobe because when I wore this, it was apparently such a shock to my boys, they each exclaimed something along the lines of “Wow, Mama! What pretty colors on your dress!” And that includes Andrew. What caught my eye about this dress were the colors— the jewel tones on a neutral black and the so-interesting hand print which goes up the center of the back and front of the dress. It looks so pretty with red lipstick.

The dress I snatched up during LaGarconne‘s extra 20% off winter sale so it was (finally) a reasonable price. I’m looking forward to wearing it all spring and summer! But for now, it’s perfect with a sweater and leggings.

Dress: Carven; leggings: Hue; boots: Rachel Comey (sold out): similar here and here. Sweater: similar here (the most similar color here is timber wolf).

How about you? Are you “hugging all the colors” like Milla, or more of a neutrals gal like Anne? Have a lovely day!

  1. Love this! Short dresses and black tights are my favorite kind of outfit. Doesn’t really work with breastfeeding, but I can plan for next year, right?

  2. That dress is so cute on you – I love the colors. And wowzers, I just glanced at that website. You aren’t kidding about the prices, score on the clearance sale.

I always find myself in this weird place with clothes. I can’t bring myself to buy clothing at dirt cheap prices, but where does that leave me? I certainly wouldn’t (or couldn’t) spend $690 on a sweatshirt dress, and I don’t have the time or the wherewithal to track down end of season sales. That’s probably why my wardrobe is so uninspiring.

My grandmother was such a seamstress – she made all of my clothes until I was probably in middle school and really wanted a pair of Guess jeans! She definitely instilled in me an appreciation of good quality materials and craftsmanship. She would have also laughed at a sweatshirt that cost that much.

I need to buy a new winter coat, and I thought I’d look now to see if I could snag a good deal on a nice coat. My previous one was a gift – an expensive gray wool coat from J.Crew that has pretty much disintegrated in three years, the lining is ripped into shreds. My grandmother made the most beautiful coats, one of a zillion reasons why I miss her.

    Got any good coat recs?

  3. Ha, ha! Kristin, I would not (or could not) spend $690 on a sweatshirt dress either! Often when I find something I really love, I search all over for it elsewhere to find it at a cheaper price or I wait for it to go on sale, and then go on sale again! That is how much of what I love sells out before I can snag it, but being patient often pays off. On the other hand, it’s something I enjoy, so if you don’t want to devote the time to it, I get it!

I have come to hate shopping in person so much because of the low quality, cheap, and ultimately disappointing clothing I find in the typical mall stores. I just don’t even go anymore unless it’s to buy underwear. I have found, in general, that spending a bit more money on an item you really love and is well made is worth it (to me at least). Those items are the things I keep coming back to again and again and end up wearing the most.

As for coats, I am also in the market. I think JCrew has really nice quality coats, like this one:

Pas de Calais is an amazing brand that is really expensive, but I’ve had my eye on this coat (which is half off) in beige:

    and brown:

And for more of a parka-style, I recommend Sessun (I think a French brand). This coat is on sale for half off and I would have bought it already if only they had my size in stock:

I hope you find something reasonable that you love!

  4. Hey – thanks for being my personal shopper this afternoon!

I love the look of J.Crew’s coats, but I’ve been really disappointed in the quality of my current one. It’s not that it looks bad three years out, the lining was so flimsy that it shredded the first season. I’ve been limping along not using the pockets (because I lose everything to the lining through the holes), but now every time I put on the coat you can hear the sounds of ripping.

I feel the exact way about cost and clothing. That’s easy for me to do now with shoes because I have less of them (like three pairs only, post-surgery), but it’s more daunting for clothing. I hate shopping and trying on clothes in stores, but then I get frustrated too when I order online and the fit isn’t right.

I’ll check out those others. I saw a cute one on sale in Garnet Hill too – I’ll have to look that one up again.

P.S. I hung out with your cross the street neighbor on Saturday night! Such a small world. 🙂

  5. Lovely outfit! I am kind of in between—I gravitate towards neutrals now since it’s easier to mix/match on a busy schedule. I do however love little shots of color here and there with accessories or fun tights. I NEEEVER pay full price for clothes. I’d say about 80% of my wardrobe is either thrifted, eBayed, or from consignment stores. Even my wedding dress was eBay (hehe). With 5 people in the house, I really can’t justify paying retail for “wants.”

  6. I LOVE jewel tones, and these juicy ones on your new dress are really something. Looks wonderful!

My current wardrobe is an abbreviated version of what I usually wear – maternity clothes for the next 6 months over here 🙂 black skinnies, black blundstones or light running shoes (I walk commute to work with the stroller or next to my 2 1/2 yo riding his strider to daycare), lots of striped long-sleeved shirts, and a nice colorful scarf is my daily base. But I have lots of scarves, so I can trick myself into feeling the variety! Today I’m wearing a wool wrap with a traditional Russian flower pattern. In purple and raspberry, yep – jewel tones 🙂
