Euphoria, by Lily King
Thank you for all of your suggestions last week on new books to read! I am adding a couple of them to the list! Until then, I just finished Euphoria in record time. It was a quick read — captivating in an interesting way. It is fiction, but inspired by life events of anthropologist Margaret Mead (and her second and third husbands Reo Fortune and Gregory Bateson).
The book is the proud winner of many awards and I instantly understood why; I loved the romantic undercurrent that develops amidst the three anthropologists during their field work and the delicate balance of power revealed amidst Westerners and the New Guinean natives alike, and of course, the way it’s written is just so appealing and easy. I found myself drawn in by the intrigue of the culture and the suspense of the romantic connection that develops. It would be the perfect book to read on a vacation. If you’re looking for a beautifully and colorfully written novel, check it out!
Can we start a daytime book club while the kids are in school?
Yes, Jamie, YES!
Did you catch the Diane Rehm show this morning? This book was their Reader’s Review book. Good conversations.
Oh, darn! I missed it! I need to stay inside long enough with these boys if I’m going to catch anything!
After listening to the DR show, I picked it up. Just got around to reading it on vacation. I loved it.
