The Best American Poetry, 2015

I’ve not considered myself a reader or fan of poetry, but my sweet friend Emily (who is a creative writing teacher and poet, in addition to being an amazingly patient mother and a thoughtful, kind friend who has a knack for good listening and even better perspective taking — yes, she is awesome) is going to change all that. She gave me this book awhile back, and I’ve taken my time to read a poem every now and then before I go to bed. It’s different from reading novels or memoirs or pop science. I find that reading poetry is a slow sort of thing, and reading one or two poems at a time is the best way for me to really enjoy and think about each poem.

And since Father’s Day is fast approaching, I wanted to share one of my favorites from this collection. Let me know what you think!

My Husband, by Rebecca Hazelton

My husband in the house.
                      My husband on the lawn,
pushing the mower, 4th of July, the way
my husband’s sweat wends like Crown Royale
to the waistband
of his shorts,
the slow motion shake of the head the water
running down his chest,
all of this lit like a Poison video:
Cherry Pie his cutoffs his blond hair his air guitar crescendo.
My husband at the PTA meeting.
My husband warming milk
at 3 a.m. while I sleep.
My husband washing the white Corvette the bare chest and the soap,
the objectification of my husband
by the pram pushers
and mailman.
My husband at Home Depot asking
where the bolts are,
the nuts, the screws,
my god, it’s filthy
my husband reading from the news,
my husband cooking French toast, Belgian waffles,
my husband for all
nationalities.
My husband with a scotch, my husband
with his shoes off,
his slippers on, my husband’s golden
leg hairs in the glow of a reading lamp.
My husband bearded, my husband shaved, the way my husband
taps out the razor, the small hairs
in the sink,
my husband with tweezers
to my foot,
to the splinter I carried
for years,
my husband chiding me
for waiting
to remove what pained me,
my husband brandishing aloft
the sliver to the light, and laughing.

My Favorite Swimsuit Brands

Lido_Roma_2_grandeLido_Roma_8_grande

Since it’s summertime and we’re spending a lot of time in the water (both at the pool and the beach), I decided to try a new brand of swimwear from Seea, a California-based U.S.-made product committed to “a celebration of the style, rhythm, and grace of women’s surfing.” And while I’m not going anywhere near a surfboard, I can vouch for the quality of the above suit, which I tried on in my local Anthropologie store right before our beach trip. I stupidly left without the suit (since I hadn’t gone in looking for a swimsuit, I was wary of buying one on impulse), went back the next day to buy it, and it was gone. But I ordered it online and it arrived just in time for the beach! The fabric is nice and thick and as smooth as a seal! I would recommend sizing up at least one size, as this swimwear tends to run a bit small.

The only thing to keep in mind is that there is no shelf bra, so if you’re larger on top, you might be more comfortable with a bikini top on underneath.

I also got this top to wear with high-waisted retro bikini bottoms and I LOVE it! Same fabric, same coverage, same comfort. I took my regular size in this one and it fit perfectly.

What I love is the unique pattern and cut of the swimsuit. It is also very comfortable, and I appreciate that it has a lot more coverage on the chest — a place I tend to get too much sun, even when wearing loads of sunscreen.

Here is another style I love — black is so classic. Seea_SP15_Zuma_One_Piece_Burgandy_01_new_grande

… And this was my first choice; unfortunately it was all sold out. I love these colors together, as well as the additional coverage from the sun.

The next brand is my tried-and-true Seafolly!

I’ve had a version of the above suit for several years now and it has held up amazingly well. I get all kinds of women asking me where I got it! It’s so flattering for all body types and the color has not faded one bit, which is really nice. There’s also plenty of support in the bra area for larger chests (not me, but I do like a little lift). I love the retro style, which looks great with red lips and a cute pair of sunglasses!

Quiet Time & Classical Kids

Tchaikovsky

The parents of the children we drove home from school this school year recently dropped off the best thank-you gift: a collection of Classical Kids cd’s for our boys. I had never heard of this series, but it is awesome! On the first rainy day of summer, I popped the Tchaikovsky Discovers America cd and suddenly, all three of my boys were completely captivated. The cd consists of Tchaikovsky’s classics, like The Nutcracker, Swan Lake (my favorite), Sleeping Beauty (okay, my other favorite), the First Piano Concerto, String Serenade, and 1812 Overture. The music is the same amazing original stuff, but there are stories along with the music that add an element to hold children’s interest. I’m telling, it’s never quieter and more peaceful in my house with all three boys indoors at once than when these are playing. They listened to this while silently building a fort and doing puzzles in the living room (Emil’s new favorite activity).

This is an awesome way to introduce kids to classical music and also provide some much-needed quiet time during the crazy summer months. Since we try to really limit screen time, this is the perfect solution to our need to slow down and rest during the day in-between trips to the swimming pool, playgrounds, and hikes in the woods. I highly recommend this series!

Honey-And-Beer-Braised Short Ribs

DSC_0049

Honey-and-Beer-Braised Short Ribs with Root Vegetables (from Fire + Ice, by Darra Goldstein)

  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 4 lbs bone-in beef short ribs, cut into 3-inch pieces (I only used 3 lbs)
  • salt and freshly ground pepper
  • 1 large head garlic
  • 3 yellow onions, coarsely chopped
  • 3 sprigs thyme
  • 2 large sprigs parsley and 2 Tbsp minced parsley
  • 1/2 honey
  • 1 (12-ounce) bottle wheat ale (I used Schlafly Hefeweizen Ale)

Preheat oven to 350. Heat oil in a 6-quart braising pan (I used my cast iron dutch oven with lid) over medium heat. Rub the short ribs all over with kosher salt and pepper. Place them in the pan and sear until brown, about 2 minutes per side. With tongs, transfer the short ribs to a plate and pour off all of the fat from the pan.

Remove the outer papery skin from the head garlic and cut about 1/2 inch off the top to reveal the cloves.

Return short ribs to the pan and nestle the head of garlic, cut side up, among them. Strew the onions and carrots among the meat and stick the thyme and parsley sprigs into any nooks.

Whisk together the beer and honey in a bowl, then pour over meat and veggies (it won’t cover them). Cover the pan tightly and bake for 2 hours.

Raise the temperature to 400 and continue to bake the meat until it is very tender and the liquid has turned slightly syrupy, about 45 minutes more.

Blot or skim off as much fat as you can* and serve hot with a garnish of minced parsley.

*Since short ribs are so fatty, you can make this dish a day ahead, then refrigerate overnight. The next day you can easily remove the fat that has risen to the surface and reheat the stew gently at 300 for an hour.
