Father’s Day Gift Guide 2016

Father’s Day is fast approaching (it’s next Sunday, June 19th in case you were wondering). I thought it would be fun to do another Father’s Day gift guide for some pretty awesome gift ideas for that very deserving dad in your life. For me, that has become celebrating the father of my children. Andrew really is the best role model, nurturer, prankster, and voice of reason for our three boys. I couldn’t do this job of parenting without him!

GibbonSlackline

Gibbon Slackline, $85, REI:

This is the coolest gift. I know Andrew occasionally conducts phone conferences while slacklining, ha ha! Also, it’s fun for the whole family. This would be perfect for the outdoorsy type, or even for the dad you know who is young at heart.

Temagari Saw

Temagari Saw, $68, Best Made Company:

Says the company: Our Temagari has plunging crosscut teeth that devour both wet and dry wood once the kerf is set. Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke, keeping the thin blade rigid for a more precise and effortless slice, and conserving the energy needed for splitting. Our belt sheath keeps your hands free while scrambling for timber, and allows the opportunity to return to camp with an impressive armload of timber (without the trip back for the saw).

ball_juggling_ball

Higgins Brothers Juggling Balls, 2.5 inch, $6.50 each:

This is the standard size ball for juggling. If you’re looking for juggling balls for the first time, this is it. Fits perfectly into your hands and feels beautiful for throws and catches. Great gift for dad because of all he juggles on a daily basis!

The Hill-Side Tie, $85, Hickoree’s Hard Goods:

You can’t go wrong with a classic tie in a more modern print. The Hill-Side is my favorite brand of tie — Andrew always looks so dapper dressed in one!

Stellarscope

Stellarscope, $38, Best Made Company:

Match the calendar to the time of day, align with the poles, and aim toward Polaris. Straightforward in construction and operation, the pocketable Stellarscope reveals a highly detailed celestial map in no time at all. Find your location in the universe from anywhere on the planet using the included Northern and Southern Hemisphere maps. Designed and made in Italy for global appreciation of the democratic theater above us.

Eastwood

Phaidon Eastwood on Eastwood, $24, East Dane:

From the Masters of Cinema series from legendary cinema catalog Cahiers du Cinema, a fully illustrated overview of actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood. This hardcover reference work in which one of the great American masters of contemporary cinema revisits, film-by-film, his entire career as both a legendary actor and a remarkable director.

Paa Ball Cap

Pa Ball Cap, $80, Need Supply:

Keep the sun off his face with this American-made all cotton ball cap. I love how classic and clean it looks, and he’ll like the detail of the adjustable leather back strap.

Herschel Supply Co. Retreat Classic Backpack, $80, East Dane:

A nylon Herschel Supply Co. backpack with faux-leather trim. The top-loading main compartment has a fleece-lined laptop sleeve, small side pocket, and a pass-through port for headphone wires. The opening cinches with a drawcord and is covered by a flap with magnetic snaps. External slide pocket on the front. Padded shoulder straps and back, fully lined. For a bonus, fill it up with some of his favorites, like soft cotton tees and a couple of books on his to-read list, or a thin blanket for picnics.

Of course, the good old standbys: a beer of the month club (or a case of his favorite beer — thanks for the idea, Maggie), a favorite family photo professionally framed, or a night out with his favorite neighborhood dad friends! However you celebrate him, just make sure you do! I sure do consider myself (and my boys) lucky to have an amazing father like Andrew in my boys’ lives. Have a wonderful weekend.

  1. Thanks lady! The stellarscope is a stellar idea. I just ordered it. I like finding Father’s Day gifts that reflect interests shared by my husband and my kids – so that’s perfect. We also got the Hamilton soundtrack because the three of them like to rock out to musicals and Brain Beats in the car after school, so that will be a lot of fun too! (We couldn’t swing the $4000 it would have cost to actually see the show when we were in NYC in March! What?!?!?) Now that I think of it, the Mother’s Day gifts I receive aren’t usually shared interests – I got a swanky new wine opener this year to replace my sorry, busted one. So, hmmm, that sort of makes me chuckle. “Happy Mother’s Day! Break out the pinot!”

We always see Circus Flora on Father’s Day weekend, but this year we had the opportunity to do a backstage tour and our tickets are for this Saturday. But the circus always feels like a Father’s Day treat to us.
