Screen-Free Week!

DSC_0002

Holy moly, it’s May!

This week marks Screen-Free Weeka time when communities (and particularly their children) around the world unplug together and reconnect with the world around them. We did this last year and it was a great success. Though, I must admit, not much of a difference from the daily lives for our kids, who spend around two hours a week looking at screens (it helps that this has been part of our lifestyle from the start; we have never owned a television when we’ve had kids and computers are very easy to place out of sight). However, it’s harder for me, as all of my blogging and writing happens on a computer!

I have vowed to spend significantly less time on my own screen this week (I’ll be in the garden!) but I’ve set up plenty of blog posts in advance. The posts I have for this week will primarily be suggestions of fun activities and books that are about connecting back to the world around us. It’s very important and I hope you’ll join us, if not going completely screen-free, then at least cutting back if you can!

P.s. — Tomorrow night is Circus Night at the boys’ school… I think I finally feel ready! It’s going to be awesome!

  1. Enjoy your week in the garden! We are just starting to get our plants transplanted to the garden beds. And I can’t wait to see the pictures from circus night!

  2. We will be enjoying the garden this week with our kiddos too. We are attempting the screen free week so we are hoping for beautiful Missouri weather, we are in Springfield. I so wish our community had a circus program like St. Louis offers, my oldest boy reminds me so much of your Milo, he would love it.

  3. I wasn’t aware that it was screen free week (and since its been pouring for days, and is slated to continue right through the weekend… the timing couldn’t be worse! ;))

I try to limit screen time, but Wyatt is a true movie lover. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t beg to watch a movie. He loves nature documentaries, and several cartoons… Magic Schoolbus being his recent fave. He was explaining to James all about ‘molecules’ the other night at dinner and how he learned all the info from Magic Schoolbus, and James was like, ‘and why is it you don’t let him watch tv again?’ 🙂 Everything in moderation I guess. (Oh and Ruby just wants to watch Frozen… now that’s a strong case for screen free week).
