Dress That Mama: The Striped Dress

Okay. I think I’ve found my favorite fall outfit! Heavy-weight warm (but not too warm) long-sleeved dress with pockets? Check. Stripes? Check. Yellow? Check. Warm worn-in old boots? Check! Easy outfit.

I just ordered a few things to update my fall and winter wardrobe, but not before I cleaned out my closet, sold a bunch of things, and gave other items away. It felt good to make decisions and simplify my closet, but even better to take that money I made from selling stuff and put it toward some staples I know will take me through the cooler months. I had been on the look-out for a long-sleeved striped dress for a few months, but hadn’t found anything until a week ago, when I spotted this. And I’m so glad I waited for the perfect one! In the winter, I’ll just add black knit tights (or maybe a bright color?) and a nice long sweater, and I’ll be set.

Cotton scarf: Anthropologie (I can’t find this online, but check out  this one, or this one would be really fun with stripes!)

Long-sleeved striped dress: Madewell (but if you don’t want to spend, check out this one!)

Boots: Anthropologie (5 years old!)– find similar ones here or for less money, here

What’s on your wish list this fall? Following any color trends or styles? I find that I stick to roughly the same outfit that I know works for my body type season after season, but add trending colors or patterns. But a good pair of sturdy boots never goes out of style!

  1. This dress is fall perfection! And I love a dress with pockets. I’ve missed wearing dresses over the summer as I was nursing Alice. Now that she is eating real food along with nursing, I can usually wear a dress for an outing of a few hours and not have to worry about how the heck I’ll feed her. I mean, hiking your dress up around your chest is frowned upon in public, right?

Every time I clean out my closet I always find a few hidden gems that haven’t been worn in awhile. Which reminds me… I need to clean out my closet!

  2. I love this Lauren. You look beautiful!
Question: Where did you sell your clothes? EBay? A consignment store? I need to do this. I am holding onto things that I could barely fit into pre-pregnancy (and probably wouldn’t have worn much anyway)!

  3. Noelle, thank you! And I did a combination of things– there is a great consignment store up the street from our house, and that’s where I sold most of my stuff. Also, EBay and even Craigslist!

  4. Cutie…I like the yellow scarf with it a lot. Funny, I HAVE the “other” version of this dress, the short sleeved one from GAP…it is a nice thick warm knit, but no pockets 🙁

  5. Pretty, pretty, pretty. I LOVE that striped dress. So pretty and perfect for fall/winter! The length and pockets are great for chasing around little boys, too. Now I’ve got the urge to sell the stuff and I’m not wearing..

  6. I love your dress! I really do need to spruce up my fall wardrobe but it feels like my whole budget is going into buying W new warn clothes. I have to decide what special item or two I want most… decisions!

  7. Ok…I checked outthis dress on Madewell website. Would’ve never bought it. You rock this dress! (& should send them a photo & link to your blog!) Would love to see it w/fun, flats or heels. Yellow & gray a favoritecolor combo!

  8. Okay, so what would you say if I told you that I am wearing pretty much this exact same outfit today? B&W horizontal striped dress, 3/4 sleeve though and scoop necked, brown leather knee boots, and yellowy/mustard scarf (no print though). I am also wearing black leggings and have a dark red pea coat to cover–it’s cooold! I am tempted to take a photo and show you! And this being my first visit to your blog, I am happy to see we already have so much in common!! So nice to meet you Lauren!

  9. What a rad dress! You always wear the coolest clothes. I feel like I should hire you to give me style advice since I have no idea how to dress myself, really.

I did buy a skirt from Old Navy recently though, and it’s very similar to your dress…but you know….it’s just a skirt. Heh.
