Our German neighbors have introduced the most fun tradition to our neighborhood! For the past 3 years, they have hosted a St. Martin’s Day celebration (read more here), full of good food, decorating lanterns, mulled wine and warm cider, and a parade to the lion statue in the park a few blocks away… followed by a little chocolate coin treasure hunt in the dark. This year there were more kids (and chaos) than ever, which of course means we all had a blast.

It really is magical every time I see the line of glowing lanterns marching down our street on some November night. Does your neighborhood partake in any traditions? We took over one tradition and hope to keep the annual summer party alive… it’s so much fun to hang with the locals, don’t you think?

  1. I absolutely love your neighborhood. Have you cleared out that hall closet for me? Because I am serious about moving in. 🙂

We live in a neighborhood that’s kind of rural, and doesn’t have very many kids. So in terms of things we can do right at home, we’re kind of limited. But we live in a super historic town and they’re always doing fun old-timey things, and our elementary school is full of wonderfully creative people, so I feel like that makes up for our lack of immediate neighbors to hang out with.

It looks like a really magical time. And Milo’s sweater is quite dashing.

  2. I wish we lived in a friendlier neighborhood. After six years and many efforts we only truly know two families on our whole street. Some day……

  3. I am always so envious when I read of people having a sense of community in their neighborhood like this. I don’t know if we are not enough into the suburbs or if it’s just that I am too shy, but we barely know our neighbors even though many of them do have kids. We certainly don’t have fun events like this, makes me want to pick up and move to the mid-west!

And I’m with Allison, I had an Irish sweater just like Milo’s when I was little and he looks so handsome and grown up in it.

  4. Oh my GOSH! How special and fun! The whole neighborhood doing things is something I grew up with and one of the things I will miss in our rural setting. It’s so much fun to grow up with the same bunch of kids and have yearly traditions with them. I’m closer now to the people who I grew up with in my neighborhood than my best friends in high school. Your boys are so lucky!
